    Overview

Superman, or Superman: The Man of Steel as it was known in Europe, is a video game adaptation of the DC Comics superhero that sees him face off against Brainiac, one of his most dangerous extraterrestrial foes. It was released on the three Sega consoles of the era: the Genesis/Mega Drive, the Game Gear, and the Master System.

The game alternates side-scrolling brawler levels where Superman fights through enemies on-foot, and flying levels where Superman can use his heat vision to eliminate airborne foes. Holding off on attacking for a while allows Superman to charge his punches and heat vision for more damage. The game is notorious for its high difficulty, as foes move quickly and Superman can only take so much damage before he falls and the stage must be restarted.

The game was developed in Japan but was never released there. When developing the game, Sunsoft worked alongside Sokoban creators Thinking Rabbit as well as Superman's license holders in the west.
