A gathering of people who believe in the same higher power(s), and follow the rules laid out by the mortals chosen to be their prophets. Video games generally try to shy away from negatively portraying real religions to avoid controversy, however they make ample use of fictional in-game religions.
Two or more factions, either with the same or completely different goals, that constantly try to one-up each other. The player is sometimes forced to pick a side to root or work for during the struggle. Other times the rivalry is only mentioned in the plot.
A Sentinel is a primordial Forerunner-constructed automated electronic construct with a limited Artificial Intelligence that is made specifically to kill Flood.
Space is usually empty, but sometimes it's filled with virtual death machines.
When inventing a series of races for a sci-fi setting, creators sometimes utilize a common framework of three competing races, including Humans, advanced aliens, and monster aliens. This is especially true in video games, where variety and balance are key.
Genetically and cybernetically-enhanced supersoldiers, the SPARTANs are Humanity's first and last line of defence against the Covenant. The Master Chief is a SPARTAN-II. They are named after the ferocious Greek warriors of antiquity.
A superweapon is a structure or character with amazing powers and amazing costs. This weapon can turn the battle to its owner's side single-handedly, but is usually the most expensive and time consuming to construct.
A faction that splintered off from The Covenant and is primarily controlled and governed by The Brutes and their warmaster, Atriox. Unlike The Covenant they do not believe in The Great Journey, Only seeking conquest and revenge on the San'Shyuum and Humans.
The Covenant Civil War was an event in Covenant history which began in October 2552, with the Separatists, led by the Elites, breaking away from the Loyalists.
A parasitic life form in the Halo universe, which serves as a secondary antagonist throughout the series. It has no known origin, though it is rumored to be extragalactic.
The ancient race responsible for the Halo ringworlds, thought to be long absent from the universe.
A Forerunner belief that has an ultimate goal to preserve life.
Many games feature storylines about wide, sweeping combat between three radically different factions.
Games with vehicles that can be controlled. This applies to games that AREN'T focused on just driving, but just happen to have a vehicle segment or the ability to pilot one.
A malevolent character whose goals are evil in nature. While villains are commonly featured as antagonists, not all antagonists are necessarily villains.
