Pretty much what says in the topic. I ask this because I was improving my smithing and I noticed that my thieves guild armor improved from 72 to 96. Also, I could improve it past exquisite and now I can't. Can anyone explain why is that? Thanks.

    Armour doesn't level.

The higher your smithing skills means the better you can improve things.

But the thing is I didn't improve anything. I was still in my inventory and noticed that the armor rating was higher.

Item ratings increase with each level of it's corresponding skill. Thieves Guild armor is Light Armor, so the armor rating will increase every time you gain a level in Light Armor whether or not you put points into that skill tree.

Nope. All I did was improve my smithing skill from 85 to 87 by doing some iron daggers and leather bracers.
