Not perfect, but the hilarious bugs became part of the charm for me. Probably one of my 10 fave games ever. I was straight up living in Skyrim for about 6 weeks there. Also helped that I was unemployed at the time.

Yes, it's probably my favorite game of all time but come on bro. Calling a Bethesda game "perfect" is one of the most inappropriate uses of an adjective I've ever seen.

@oscar__explosion: Kingdoms of Amalur was pretty boring too dude... though at least it had an actual combat system and some ok writing.

I really wanted to like Skyrim. I know that a lot of other people played that game and just fell in love with this huge wonderful world, but I couldn't get the same thing out of it. It might be partly to do with the fact that fantasy settings aren't generally my favourite, but then there are other fantasy games I've played and enjoyed greatly. I just felt like the combat was really bad, and that for a world-driven game none of the characters really drew me in and interactions with them were stilted and awkward. The game was also teeming with glitches, which could sometimes be funny, but even then sort of broke things when the world wasn't trying to be funny, it was trying to be immersive and serious.

    Skyrim = boring

Kingdoms of Amalur is a better game. FACT.

You're ON DUST if you think that Kingdoms of Amalur is anything other than a mediocre slog that gets worse the longer it goes on. I give that game a fun factor of 2! TRUE FAKTZ.

Also I can't tell if this thread is a joke or not. Skyrim is pretty great... but when it comes down to games that came out in 2011, Dark Souls has it beat.

I feel like most people who absolutely fell in love with Skyrim never actually played an Elder Scrolls game before.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I don't like any of the elder scrolls games, enjoyed fallout 3 a lot (because vats is there. Combat is terrible otherwise.)

To this day, I regret buying Skyrim. It's a pretty bad game, even modded, it was really boring. I gave it a chance, as I loved Oblivion, but Oblivion is SOOO much better than Skyrim.

@oscar__explosion: It's always hard to tell with the internet. I got bored of Skyrim after around 50 hours. I got bored with Amalur 20 hours in and then proceeded to play another 15 hours at my own misfortune.

Fun for a while, despite the ridiculous bugs at launch, but pretty quickly got boring. The lack of real loot and the grind to make the best gear ruined it for me. Repetitive dungeons didn't help. Good for a while huge world and all but far from great.

BTW, get a new engine Beth you cheap bastards.

Are you high on drugs? When I think of a "boring" game, there are no many that come to my mind quicker than Kingdoms of Amalur.

EDIT: read your follow up post, still stand by my point. Kingdoms of Amalur is boring as fuck.

This. I think I enjoy modding the game more than playing it, one thing is certain, I could never play vanilla skyrim as it is a very ugly game to me.

It was kind of fun for a couple of weeks when it was released. But I think TotalBiscuit summed up my thoughts pretty well. "Vast as the ocean, deep as a puddle". Exploring beautiful environments is nice but I like more robust and challenging RPG elements. I know, the TES-games are more in the action RPG genre than hardcore D&D. But even most ARPGs gives you more critical choices to consider than Skyrim. So yeah, it got a bit boring at times.

It's a great game no doubt, but a lot of it's flaws continue to spoil the party for me. That said, on PC the Steam Workshop and Nexus stuff as been outstanding.

Nice try, Brad. I still haven't forgiven you for strong-arming Skyrim in as GotY in 2011. Saints Row deserved that, man...

(Actually Dark Souls deserved it, but only Vinny played that)

Oblivion is just so much more interesting to explore. Even though the caves and dungeons kinda suck, the cities are all awesome, the world is varied and beautiful, and... well that's it. But apparently it's enough because everytime I think about going back and finishing Skyrim's main quest I think of installing Oblivion instead.

I don't see how these guys that run the site can give scores and decide GOTY contenders if only one or two played a certain game. I know it's not official or anything, but still, I don't think any decision should be made unless everyone plays the game and gives their own opinion on it, and they go from there.

I really enjoyed skyrim, but at one point it started to feel very repetitive, especially regarding the combat. And man fuck the Falmer. I hadn't seen everything and i hadn't finished the story when I quit playing, but I kinda felt like I had seen it all. the combat wasn't really challenging and instead became kinda cheap as the game went on. And while the lore is quite interesting, your decisions and actions never amount to any real world change.

It is a great game, but the writing is very flat, both Fallout games have way more personality than Skyrim. I love Bethesda's games for their sense of physical scale and the exploration they offer and I put in 200+hours on Skyrim without finishing the game. But its not perfect by a long way. If you thought this game was good the added power of this next generation should really expand the potential of open-world games.
