The Fall: Last Days of Gaia

Game » consists of 1 releases. Released Jul 12, 2006

The Fall is highly influenced by the Fallout series (thus the name) and the Mad Max movies. The game lets you and your team of up to six fight in a post-apocalyptic environment using tons of weapons and vehicles.

    Great idea, bad implementation

The Fall: Last Days of Gaia borrows a lot from it's inspirations, the Fallout series and the Mad Max movies.

The game does look relatively good, the world is full of small communities of bandits, farmers and militia. It is not an open world for you to explore, but consists of cells with limited exits similar to Fallout. All the dialogues are synched but the acting is pretty bad (in the German version atleast). The dialogue system is outdated aswell, don't expect a branching system like in the Fallout games, it's more stripped down like in Jagged Alliance where you simply have topics you can talk about. Nothing more, nothing less. There are loads of weapons, munition, armor and alot of useless junk for your collecting pleasures. You are also supposed to be able to modify your weapons with scopes, silencers and other stuff, but i couldn't manage to do so successfully due to the lack of explanation of the mechanic both in-game and in the thin manual.

The story of the game is practically nonexistent and is simply an excuse to go out there and whack fools with your weapon of choice. There is no violence in the game whatsoever... the npcs are quite stupid and rely almost completely on your commands. You can have up to 5 of them travel along your side. But again don't expect any love affairs, rivalries or any fun dialogue between them like in the Jagged Alliance or Baldur's Gate games.
One of the bullet points of the game is it's use of numerous vehicles which you can freely steer around the wasteland. They all look great and fit the post-apocalyptic setting but the controls feel too inprecise and countless bugs and clipping errors spoil the otherwise fun fast ride.

On the technical side, as already mentioned, the game looks quite good, but you probably would need a really beefy setup to enjoy the graphics to the fullest. My 3GHZ DELL with 1GB of RAM and a Radeon 9800pro (far above the recommended stats) only delivered choppy gameplay at 1024x768 back when I used to play the game.

The main problem with the game right now is that even after numerous patching it still feels unfinished. There are tons of bugs, the design isn't that great, the dialogues are laughable, the story isn't gripping at all....

Would i recommend it? Only if you know every Fallout game by heart, starve for the post-apocalyptic setting, don't care about the bugs and speak a little bit of German. Then it will give you a quick fix until something better comes out.
