Well, the demo of this is now out in Europe and I've just played through it and I... still don't really get it.
The music is nice, and it is pretty - expecially if you liked the design of Pixar's Incredibles as it looks like it could take part in that universe.
Gameplay in the demo boils down to mashing a couple of buttons with no real understanding of what the hell is going on. There is so much happening on the screen that it is hard to keep track of what you are fighting, or where you are. Both screens are filled with so much information it is overloading, particularly when the action is interrupted by pop-ups to tell you that you've just picked up a 'space pear' or similar, or to press a button or draw something. Cluttered is the only way I can describe it. For example on the gamepad screen there are large icons for the ZR and ZL buttons, which just seems strange considering that those buttons are at your fingertips. There are some nice touches, such a a puzzle in a garage which makes use of both screens, but generally I found it to be the same button mashing combat for set piece after set piece until I reached the end.
It could be that the full game has great tutorials and teaches you the controls and the theory behind them, but the demo doesn't. I just ended up wondering around the screen about mashing X & A, and occasionally drawing a circle, line or ↱ on the control pad (which if you hit in just the wrong place suddenly opens other screens) without really having any understanding at all about why I was meant to be doing this. In all honesty having now played it, I am a complete loss as to why this particular title is to be considered the 'system seller' for the Wii U as the demo was incredibly underwhelming for the hype that this is getting.
I guess the most damning thing for me is that having watched the preview videos, I still wasn't really sure how this game was meant to be played. Having now played it, I'm still non the wiser. I guess maybe it is one of those titles that you have to play until it 'clicks' and you have the ah-ha moment but I didn't have that during this play-through of the demo. It wasn't bad, but sure didn't make me want to lay out £40 on it.
