E3 2018: Mickey, You're Too Late for Kingdom Hearts III

As a Kingdom Hearts fan I can say that this is exactly what we're looking for, Jeff. Larxene's back! And oh no Aqua!!

One of my favorite things about Kingdom Hearts was always being some anime dude hanging out with classic Disney characters. Seeing more and more CG Disney/Pixar properties being announced for this game has me wary but I'm still planning on buying this immediately because I'm an absolute moron.

This has gotten me so excited for the release. The delays are probably mainly to fix the combat issues. January cannot come soon enough. Aqua stay away from the darkness!

Basically my same series of reactions.

This is kind of a bummer for me too, but to be fair, they've done most of the classic movies between all the other games. My bummer more comes from that I just... don't like a lot of Pixar movies besides Toy Story and The Incredibles, so Monsters, Inc. is super disappointing. Frozen and Tangled are ok by me though.

Man, I have to wonder what kids who are just coming to this franchise will think of this game. This franchise started before the intended audience was even born and has carried a single overarching story throughout (how confusing that narrative can be is beside the point). Someone who got a PS4 as their childhood console is either going to be super-pumped to hear that there's more available in the form of HD Collections or super-bummed that the only way to find out anything about Aqua is to play an upres'd PSP game. Or go hunting down information on a Wiki. Or watch an "all you need to know" Youtube video.

On the other hand, it looks like they know what people who have been playing these games since the original release actually want and they're delivering on that as much as possible.

Are they ever going to show gameplay that looks interesting even a little? I get that the incomprehensible nonsense story is supposed to appeal to the fans, but that gameplay looks basically lifeless.

Is it just me, or does Sora's cutscene voice sound... off. His battle barks sound correct, but something about his speaking voice feels like a fake character. Kinda like an Igor in Persona 5 type deal.

It was weird to me there were no sound effects once that song kicks in.

@justin258:I always got the impression that the intended audience is the people that grew up with the PS2 games. Hence why these trailers are jamming in so many callbacks to every game in the series. KH built a scarily devoted fanbase with the original games but its ridiculous story practices stop anyone new from coming in.

Clearly people who don't care about the game don't know the significance of the stinger at the end with Aqua, but THAT SHIT IS MIND BLOWING.

@jeremym: I approve of their decision to stay current with this stuff because there's no part of me that wants to explore Agrabah for the 3rd time over, but that's also due to some resentment on my part that Halloween Town isn't returning. "If I'm not getting what I want, no one is!"

Is there anyone, really only one single person, who wants more of those damn gummi ship levels? Oh my god.

Anyway I'm still looking forward to this one for some reason.

I mean, I like shmups and all, but I just don't think the gummi ship sections felt good. And the building aspect was kinda neat but had next to no real effect (could be misremembering here, it's been a while since I played through KH2).

@sessh: I always enjoyed them. Maybe it's not the best shmup of all time, but it was fun enough and to me it wouldn't be a mainline kingdom hearts without them. As for the building, it makes the later courses a lot easier and if you're going to go for the harder gummi missions it's pretty much a requirement.

Why did they turn the sound fx completely off for all the cutscenes lol, pretty strange to let that slide for two of the largest companies in video games and film!?

@reflekshun: Looks like a conscious decision to not muffle the song, as it doesn't happen when the song isn't going. It was a bad decision though.

I have a theory that they decided at the last minute not to reveal a world they were going to, and had to splice the footage they had into two trailers. That would explain the extremely similar trailers as well as the choice to put in action heavy scenes during the song that made it very obvious there were no sound effects. The third trailer also has no sound effects during the song but there's almost no action so you wouldn't notice it if it hadn't been so obvious in the others.
