I would love to see more Monster Hunter videos on the site. Monster Hunter Monday. Mondayster Hunter... or something.

This is my first MonHun and I started with the Charge Blade as well. Super fun weapon once you get the hang of it. I can't wait to try some of the other things, but I'm sticking with this one for the time being.

i thought Vinny would be more into gs or hammer, massive damage per hit, but the charge blade seems really fun.

@danryckert You're not even close to the end. There is another area to unlock, seven new monsters, two variants, and then tempered variants of everything.

Why no love for the insect glaive? I fell in love with this weapon in MH4U. The attacks are fast and the jump attacks delvers some devastating hits as well as providing more opportunities to mount. I've also has an affinity for the switch axe since TRI and it seems particularly good in World (only played Beta so far).

Second the call for more Monster Hunter content. I'm still a ways from being able to buy MHW, so I need something to sustain me. So bummed, and pissed at Capcom, that the switch in the west is getting left out of Monster Hunter content. The whole switch MH Double Cross situation is very similar to the time MH Portable 3rd, the last game for the PSP, never made it to the west.

And at the end of a quest you can hold X instead of tapping X repeatedly, to get all the items very quickly if you want to.

Holding X works for things like mining rocks too, BTW.

You eventually learn how to dodge the dreaded hip checks but yeah, there's definitely a lot of bullshit to those gen 1 & 2 hitboxes.

A tip for the shitty Zorah Magdaros mission - just hang out on the boat with the Dragonator. You have cannons which you can load extremely quickly, two guys helping you load them infinitely (even when you run out of cannonballs) and you can immediately activate the Dragonator when it comes up. You can basically shoot all of the cannons every half minute or so until it dies. I cut my time on that end part in half doing that. Still sucks, but sucks less if you're trying to grind it for materials.

@neocalypso: I'm not on a pro, and I occasionally pull 60 or close to it, generally in the arena. But I've been blown away by the lack of any noticeable slowdown even when everything is really popping off.

@dystopiax I think the difficult but rewarding part of the insect glaive is in understanding how to get the buffs based on what monster you're hunting. Makes you feel like you're actually learning your prey :) And jumping around like a maniac is so rewarding when you become adept at chaining, especially if you can effectively follow the monster as it moves, dodge and reengage without landing, or target particular spots on bigger monsters. And the added dynamic of kinsect management and upgrade adds another great layer to the experience.

The other item that has really engaged me is the gunlance. Fun to feel like an immovable force and landing a huge shot gives me the same vibe as a close-up shotgun blast in other games.

Good to see the team enjoying MH still.

Abby is becoming the new old Dan "I don't like this thing because I can't be bothered learning it".

@deathpooky: that's funny, I've done the Zora fight twice. Once in story and once as a special optional mission. I've never had to fight Neri and I've never even seen that boat attached to the dragonator outside of the cutscenes. I've always thought that the mission just lets you win.

@purc: yeah I've seen combo videos and knew enough about the system to see how it was rewarding, but the low base damage values and still not quite understanding which part corresponds to which color, what all the slots mean, etc. was just not really conducive to being a good first weapon, at least for me.

@merxworx01: Yeah, to my understanding the mission is pretty much auto-win moving to the next phases, even if you do nothing, though maybe you can get more materials. I've not killed all those core things, not fought Nergigante, done almost nothing at the end/beginning, and still finished. Guess even they understood how much that mission was confusing and generally not fun. But you can at least speed up the end phase by doing more damage to him in my experience.

Maybe Vinny can still get that Horizon Pallico set. I know you can give other people stuff in monster hunter. Maybe if other people have extras of that “lens material” then can just give it to him and he can turn it in that way. I don’t know how, but I have an extra lens somehow.

@humanity: I would be up for a 'Duders Pact' whereby we build a crew who all promise to wait until the PC launch, buy it day 1 and then join a duders pact discord... The temptation is strong for me also but waiting for a PC version will be worth it, little else coming out around that time for me

I still can't wrap my mind around it but this tutorial was really good at showing the cool charge blade moves in really cool situations.

I wish I could learn it though, that invincible timed knock out counter looks amazing. The idea of a weapon that can knock out a monster with a instance button press jsut by countering their charge just seems so cool.

@pyrodactyl: By the sounds of it she's done hardly anything, 2 hours at most, and has basically decided it's not a game for here, which is fair enough. I don't agree with any of her criticisms other than the multiplayer stuff being obtuse, complaining about not having your Palico in the opening mission is just complaining for the sake of it.

Abby has a very odd taste in games, preferring visual novels (which are barely even games) to something like MH which is a game based all around the gameplay. Different strokes for different folks an all that, but an odd hiring choice for a gaming website.

@jwat: IF that were true it would be nothing but a bonus since Giant Bomb has a huge void in regards to games like that and it's fun to put new eyes on new things.

But what is actually the case, I suspect, is that Abby just doesn't like Monster Hunter and that this is not indicative whatsoever in her overall taste in video games.

My theory on the development of this game is that they had 2 hats full of pieces of paper with ideas written on them. One was labeled "GREAT IDEAS", full of, well, great ideas, and the other one was labeled "SHITTY IDEAS", full of shitty ideas. They had to draw one idea at random from each hat until they had a game. But all BS aside, I am really enjoying this game and all of the GB MHW content. Keep up the good work.
