Monday Magic Multiplayer Madness

Note that this was recorded from a home stream; I'm pretty sure I got the source resolution right and everything but if there are any technical issues let me know and I'll try to get them resolved before the next time I try to throw up a video. Been a few years!

Hey Matt! Cool to see some more Magic content on GB. I started playing towards the end of last year. Never had a thing for Magic, but Arena made the game really click for me. Very fun! And always nice too see F2P done well.

Yeah, Arena is really one of the smoothest clients and business models I've seen. Really been digging it a bunch.

@rorie: If you thought you missed things in our mirror match, oh boy. I didn't attack your Planeswalker because...I just forgot that was a thing you could do. I saw you getting ahead on the board, panicked, and just completely forgot that was possible. I'm not sure it would have made a big difference, you were ahead and ramping up.

I was glad to see you forgot about the Tracker's +1/+1 bonus. My only good play!

Oh, trust me, I forget more in every Magic match than I've ever known. I make so many dumb mistakes, it's amazing.

Matt Rorie is honing his Magic skills. He's much better than I've seen him on UPF. Arena got me into any form of Magic. Good game.

My main deck pre Theros was Simic Flash because I'm a monster person.

Any chance, perhaps, you could find your way to put up the successful Yama run? I bet a lot of people would love to see that.

I don't think I recorded that one natively so it'd be a little difficult! Hopefully there'll be something similar in Spelunky 2 though.

Nice to see that the Rorie streams will be archived here from now on (does saying it make it so*...?) I don't play Magic or any other multiplayer card game like it (I do dabble in single-player card games) but they are always easy background watching for when I'm doing work.

It does seem as if MTGA could perhaps benefit from a more decipherable colour scheme or bigger/clearer number indicators. It's all a bit bland and samey. With Hearthstone et al, it's rather easy to eye what's going on - even in a minimised screen and with a small amount of attention. When I was watching this the other day, I was actually quite distracted because of the lack of numbers popping out. I had to really focus for longer than I wanted to (no offence intended!) on the video to gain context.

It's a nice enough style, and I don't imagine most hardcore Magic players are looking for Play-Doh colour schemes to invade their super serious fantasy love-in, but in the age of streaming and attacks on our attention it does seem like a bit of an oversight?

Thanks for recording this one, Rorie. Haven't played Magic myself in nearly twenty years (and probably won't ever get back into it), but it's neat watching it be played.

Would love to throw down the gauntlet myself but I just downloaded Arena *checks watch* 9 days ago. I'll need to grind for at least another week to get a deck tuned enough to pilot on stream.

I'm trying to get into MTG Arena myself (extreme beginner) so it's nice to see it covered on GB. Get's me even more exited to dig deeper.

@rorie - I just want to say how happy and pleasantly surprised I am to see this video on GiantBomb. I got into MTG during the Christmas break and am absolutely in love with the game (I play both paper and Arena).

Looking forward to seeing more streams and hopefully getting some matches in against ya! (I kind of stink but I still have fun)

Hmm we should maybe make a list on the forums or something. The main drawback to dueling is that you can't complete the daily quests, unfortunately!

Cool, I started out with mono green as well when first playing MTG:A. Only paid for a mastery pass or two so far but still having fun without having all that many cards. Magic is an interesting alternative after having played Hearthstone for so long, took quite a bit of learning but that's part of the fun.
