Also worth checking out http://www.wingsofstnazaire.com/ which you can play in your browser. I like what it does with modern implementation of 2D sprites in a space shooter.

Strike Suit Infinity is pretty great. Also coming out soon is Starlight Inception which I think looks a little bland but still good fun, and theoretically Star Citizen will come out eventually.

On the subject of Enemy Starfighter, I think it's worth pointing out that it's a one-man indie game. Looks pretty spectacular anyway, but even more so when you consider it has a single developer (and he used to work at Bungie!)

I think I just found proof god exists. How else could a return of the Space Sim over the next few years with all of these games coming out coincide with the release of something like the Oculus Rift be anything but an act of god?

yeah your completely right, they owe a lot to Peter Elson and Chris Foss, though, homeworld is a much easier source to draw from and so, largely responsible for its proliferation. The style undergoes refinement (imo) and leads to amazing artists like sparth (im guessing) who become big points of inspiration for young artists. It's always a big incestuous tree (i do think it leads somewhere completely different).

Well I know where I'm making a b-line to come Sunday/Monday at PAX.
