Overview
Links 386 Pro is a behind-the-back golf simulation game developed and published by Access for the PC (running MS-DOS) in 1992. It was later released for the Mac (under the name Links Pro) in 1993.
The sequel to Links: The Challenge of Golf, Links 386 Pro revamps the game's UI and rendering engine (including support for high-resolution Super VGA graphics) while adding support for higher-quality courses and bonus game options (including split-screen support for multiple views and the option to "record" players for use as pre-recorded opponents). The game's name is a reference to its updated support for i386 computer architecture, and the game itself was later used as the base for the first three games in the Microsoft Golf series.
Instead of the Torrey Pines Golf Course from the previous game, this game includes a recreation of the Harbour Town Golf Links (located in the U.S. resort town of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina). Like its predecessor, the game supports the "Links Championship Course" expansion courses and includes a tool for converting courses from the previous game (including the original Torrey Pines course).
The PC version later received an enhanced re-release in CD-ROM format (as Links 386 CD) in 1994. Along with an additional course, this version supports loading courses from the CD itself (rather than requiring an installation to the hard disk), simulated aerial "fly by" videos, bonus support for the Computer Sports Network modem-based tournament, and an alternate announcer pack (featuring the voice of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait). The bonus course included is based on the regional release, with the North American release including the Banff Springs Golf Course (located in the Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada) and the European release including The Belfry (located in the golf resort of the same name in Warwickshire, England).
