Overview
Death Gate is an adventure game from Legend Entertainment, and like most of their adventure games uses a first-person interface and a literary work as its basis. In this case, the literary work is the Death Gate Cycle heptalogy written by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss, who are best known for their Dragonlance and Forgotten Realm novels. The novel series was completed shortly after the game's release, so Legend Entertainment created its own ending to the story.
The player takes the role of Haplo, member of a demigod like race of wizards known as the Patryn, who is sent out to retrieve pieces of a magic seal from four different element-themed worlds in order to recreate the shattered Earth. Additionally, he is also tasked with discovering the whereabouts of the Patryn's bitter enemies (and magical equals) the Sartan, who trapped the Patryn in a nightmarish prison called The Labyrinth eons ago and have since mysteriously disappeared.
Although the interface resembles other RPG games of the time, it is an adventure game featuring many inventory-based puzzles. It also features a magic system in which the player has to assemble spells from runes: the player is often tasked with finding spell "recipes" before they can use them.
