Overview
Alex Rodriguez was drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1993 as a shortstop coming out of the University of Miami. By 1996 he took over the everyday shortstop position with the Mariners were he batted .358, and hit 36 home runs.
In 2001, he left the Mariners as a free agent for the Texas Rangers, were he was awarded the American Leagues MVP award in 2003. However, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees in 2004. Because the Yankees already had Derek Jeter as their everyday shortstop, Rodriguez transitioned to the position of third baseman. While with the Yankees, he won two more MVP awards in 2005 and 2007, and was part of the Yankees roster that won the World Series in 2009.
Rodriguez's career has been dogged by allegations of his using performance enhancing drugs. After evidence had been brought to light that proved he had been using such drugs while with the Yankees, he was suspended by Major League Baseball for the duration of the 2014 season.
