So Dream Build Play is an anual competition for XNA developers for Xbox 360. I entered last year and failed bad.
This time I'm not going to repeat the mistake of making a crappy game, but instead make a funny one. I know kind of what I want to do. The basic stuff I have figured out is that it's going to be a sidescrolling platformer (how original!) and it's going to be based on physics. Weapons are key, as is gore and violence. However, it would be nice if anyone had any idea of how to make it more interesting? Any ideas are appreciated and if your idea is a good one, then I will steal it! :P
Anything ideas are welcome, and thanks!
Xbox 360
Platform »
The Xbox 360 is the second game console produced by Microsoft Corporation and is the successor to the original Xbox.
I'm making a video game. Anyone have ideas?

Side-scrolling stealth game. When was the last time someone made one of those?
Here's two stupidly random ideas to consider:
Riding Pumas.
When Puma's die, hide in their corpses for stealth or eat their corpses for health.
Your probally going to make something like mirrors edge, bionic commando from the sounds of it. Wait, what about a survival horror game?
make it a sidescrolling multiplayer golf game where there is one ball and four golfers playing simultaneously and the one that sinks the ball wins and whacking other players with the club is allowed. Kinda like a hockey-golf-fighting combination.
Oh and when you hit the ball and it goes far the screen zooms out to contain the players and the ball making everything tiny and hilariously unplayable.
And when that happens the players run towards the ball to hit it again but because they are so small they have chipmunk voices when they jump.
ITS GOLD!
The only issue with making really manic and insane games is they have to be really really well done to translate well.
If it were me, and I wanted to make an extremely insane and fun platformer, I might make it in the mold of something like.... Sonic the hedgehog, the first ones. Speed, like, out of control crazy ass speed, and make crazy stupid shit happen. Riding a space octopus is good, but space octopus are slow. A space octopus driving a drag bike... now you're getting close.
These games are always pretty fun, but they have to be really well done technically to make it feel right. You want the right sense of speed, just enough out of control, very few (preferable none) hard stops in the flow of the levels. I think that's probably he hardest part of the DBP stuff, getting your creation to that level of polish worthy of an XBL arcade contract. Professional art, well done music (if you can use up-tempo music that gets more manic and crazy the faster you move, bonus points), and a level of polish that can set it apart from the pack of stuff submitted.
Anyway, this is getting too long, and I'm sure you don't want a full game design document, you probably already have most of one. right?
I have an idea. It's probably really stupid in some peoples minds and a bit difficult to explain.
A side scroller, where you start off as a plain old glowing ball (or blob of goo) and whatever you touch, you turn into. The levels would be filled with a huge assortment of objects and you have to use a strategy of, what to touch and turn into, to get over or under certain objects. Sort of like Kirby morphing in some crazy way. Also there would be enemies to avoid and you could kill them and it could be gory.
It would use a great emphasis on physics and the levels will tilt and turn in storms and wind. You may have to turn into something heavy like an anvil or airplane when this happens so you don't fall off the screen, or turn into a balloon or feather to get over very high walls. Just get from point A to B like a Mario game.
Haha, it sounds pretty crazy eh.
Good call, but what about vampires? Or is that too '09?" No zombies. "

Sounds pretty cool, though I doubt I would have time to create that kind of system before the deadline March 3rd. I like the idea of change the character to something else, perhaps the main character could be a parasite that "takes control" of enemies and stuff. Thanks for the help!
Make a game where the purpose of the game is to make yourself shrink. The more you shrink, the more points you get.
Also, there should be another level where you have go grow really big, except you can only grow bigger by eating trash. The more trash you eat, the bigger you get.
Finally, the last level should be about multiplying yourself. The more copies you make of yourself, the easier it will be to finish your business report that your boss needs for next week's meeting.
Make a Zombie Revenge sequel.

If you're going to do a simple platformer maybe make it about a wannabe sumo who starts off every level small and skinny. All the power-ups can be food based and the more he eats the bigger and more powerful he gets. Maybe with a touch of Altered Beast where to clear a level he has to eat enough to become 'Super Sumo' just to make the level boss show up.

I approve.
For the love of god dont work off memes.
Dont make it generic, people can play shitty platform/overhead shooting games anywhere.
If your going to make it funny, make it "clever" funny. Dont rely on things that are "established" funny.
