Harmonix's Alex Rigopulos Loves...Stephen Colbert?

Just keep reading, okay?

No Caption Provided

The largest single contributor to the Super PAC (political action committee) supporting Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert’s faux presidential campaign is...Alex Rigopulos?

Yes, Alex Rigopulos, the very same CEO of Harmonix, the creators of Rock Band and Guitar Hero. The executive donated nearly $10,000 to “Americans For a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.”

The New York Times has broken down the contributors to Super PACs, and unearthed that Rigopulos contributed $9,600 towards Colbert’s quest to expose the ridiculousness of Super PACs.

Super PACs are the result of a Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in “Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission.”

I won’t get into the politics of the decision--there's plenty of that elsewhere--but the net result has been more money than ever before finding its way into elections, and Colbert’s Super PAC has been doing its best to lampoon the process ever since.

Rigopulos has contributed to campaigns in the past, having donated thousands of dollars to President Obama's campaign in 2008.

If you haven't been paying attention to Colbert's antics, here's a taste of what you've been missing:

@Napalm: definitely me and there's always been a balance of informed/uninformed, but I haven't seen sincerely conspiratorial in a while. just weird is all. (about something so harmless that is...we all know Lord British is trying to control our minds from Space...that's not a conspiracy, THAT'S A FACT, JACK).

...it's the internet. I remember when literally every comment on the internet was, "Fuck you. Get out of my face." Ah, BBSs were great.

While I'm not entirely sure if this deserves an article all its own, I'll ignore it because of how pleased I am to be reminded of that video.

From what I understand, years ago a forum on wich Methodis used to post got closed because of Harmonix and it completely broke his mind. He also got himself banned from the SomethingAwful forums multiple times because he can't stop flipping the fuck out every time Harmonix is mentioned.

Yeah it truly takes dedication to be so obsessed over Harmonix that he spent $40.00 in registration fees for Somethingawful because he kept on getting banned.

your unedited comment was "Yet people got so mad there that they tried to E-stalk me and ended up being led to a message board where their personal information was comprimised by friends! I don't know what's worse, pretending to hate a video company on the internet, or having your feelings hurt to the point you try to stalk someone because they insulted a video game company? Who knows!"

I removed it because it's a discussion that is not valid for this place, and is valid for places like rock-banned.com or SomethingAwful. That said, the people who get so upset to come in here everytime I comment on something is funny to me and they can call me crazy as much as they want because I am not the one getting upset in the digital realm or in real life to the point of going out of my way other than commentating on articles. :)

Also how come this is news yet the thousands of dollars Bobby Kotick gives to charity ever year not "news"? Is this implying that a political organization is more important then supporting sick and needy children around the world? Donating to charities when you steal from your workers and rip off your customers is not news it's American Corporate Tax Law.

Isn't donating to a fake Super PAC for Stephen Colbert kind of defeating the purpose of being anti-Super PAC? "Politicians shouldn't be getting this money, give it too MEE!!!"

Edit: Also, this isn't news, at all. If you're going to post crap like this why don't you post what every game developer ever has donated to places?

Kotck has never stolen from workers or ripped off customers. I don't think any CEO has, and if they have they where quickly out of business or being sued. Bobby Kotick is a great man, a legendary one some might say. He helped take such great franchises as CoD, Guitar Hero, Spiderman and brought them from absolute bottom of the pits rubbish into national treasures. Internet hyperbole got mad because he is very popular. It's the same reason why so many people hate Justin Bieber.

It's just a poor double standard, and makes you question the validity of this article in the first place other than to act as a fluffer to their friends. Mr. Kotick gave $3 million to vets 2 months ago, not a peep was heard. Kotick also stared in a movie, titled MONEYBALL, to give money to charity. GiantBomb instead took the opportunity to poke fun instead of shining a light on the kindness of Mr. Kotick's heart. Them, some no name CEO gives $10k to a political joke and it's headlines? And CELEBRATED to boot?! I know this site is light hearted, but some things make you question the editorial decisions around here.

I will gladly pay $50 to support this site, it's podcasts and it's videos, but I question the news content at times. I understand they're trying to make it better, and having the actual real news stories like the exposition on Game Reviews, Aspergs playing Games etc are really fun to read, along with informational and educate people on things about this "culture"(and I hate to use that). That's where things like these come into play. It serves no real purpose other than to highlight the "Why?". It would be okay if you could turn it into a real article, maybe explaining the links of video game ceo's to the political hemisphere and the elections, but this just seemed worthless.

I guess I'm the only one who found it an interesting read. And the folks at Harmonix, they are friends of the site, and so it is nice to hear what a friend is up to, even if it sort of makes them sound like a bit of a hypocrite.
