I'm a rather skeptical person but for some reason I am mildly excited to see where this endeavor will go.

The whole idea of connecting two different games on different platforms even into the same living universe just seems so cool. I am however very skeptical at CCP's ability to make a good first person shooter experience right off the bat, as they have no prior experience in that field at least to my knowledge.

So are you excited to see where this will go ?

I think my view basically mirrors yours. I've no idea whether CCP can make a good FPS, but they're very good at trying things with games nobody else is doing and there's a lot of potential for some interesting and very original stuff to happen with this game if nothing else. That alone makes me want to see how they do with it.

Conceptually it's brilliant, but what little I've seen (that one trailer at E3) didn't make it look that fun to play, but that was last year. No telling how it's changed since then.

While the idea certainly is intriguing, I could see it hurting EVE since that game has been all about player control in the game and now they are letting a bunch of other people outside the game have an impact, and while it is interesting how it will play out, for some reason I'm afraid that it will be filled with trolls losing on purpose. And as far as I have seen the gameplay didn't seem that fun to play, but that was a long time ago, so things could have changed a lot.

I don't know if they'll be able to do it, but my ultimate hope (as somebody who is an EVE newbie, but learning the ropes... and excited enough about it to check out the Dust 514 forum on GiantBomb) is this:

I hope that the conflicts in EVE Online cause the battles to be taken to the ground, where the objectives are controlled by actual players dropping supplies onto their troops and telling them what to shoot. I hope that players can look at their record a year after the game comes out and proudly say "I was at the Battle of Spaceulon Zeta." I don't think that's actually a planet, but you probably get the idea.

Hypothetically speaking, since I would be under NDA, if I got into the beta, I might tell you, hypothetically that the game is fucking awesome. It most certainly is not the best fps out there by a long shot, but it's one hell of a first attempt for a company that's never made a shooter before. Hypothetically of course.

The concept is incredibly ambitious. I hope it is successful for the coolness factor alone. The actual gameplay looks pretty average, but that's not going to stop me from playing the shit out of this game when it comes out.

Ultimately I think it will only be a mild success at best, simply because they may be too far ahead of their time on this. It has the potential to be groundbreaking though. In the future, we very well may see a bunch of different games from different genres entwined in the same universes.
