Reports: Comcast is buying Time Warner Cable

In an all stock deal, Comcast will be buying Time Warner Cable for $159 per share. The deal is expected to be announced tomorrow.

Apple and Time Warner were in talks to have Time Warner content stream through Apple TV. That means that Comcast could capture that too.

And to think this morning I was listening to them talk about Comcast on the Bombcast today thinking "Good thing I don't have to deal with that bs."

It is all over, who wants to start looting virtual goods with me?

Comcast will shed three million of the TWC subscribers so that they do not cross the ownership threshold. The article above explains the cap.

I don't have either service, but that would certainly suck for people just because it means even less choice in cable/ISP's because of all the consolidation.

@drdarkstryfe: That is mildly encouraging, but I'm sure big business lobbying is already working to destroy what is very much becoming a problem.

I'm not sure how this wouldn't be a monopoly. Hopefully the government steps in to block it.

Nah, I'm sure Comcast has already donated "campaign money" to the right congressmen already. Anyway, all cable companies are essentially government sanctioned monopolies since they get the sectors they can operate in. And there's also still a few more cable companies out there.

So as someone with almost no knowledge of either situation, how is this any different than the deal a couple years ago when T-Mobile agreed to be purchased by AT&T that was then shut down with anti-monopoly laws or whatever?

Big telecoms are the worst. It's no better here in Canada.

Oh man, I didn't think American internet could get any worse. Looks like I was wrong. Anyone who thinks this is gonna be a good thing for the consumer is deluded. Comcast has no incentive to improve internet quality without competitors. Companies do not spend money to improve customer experience just for the hell of it.
