Looks can be deceiving
I first came across the Hobo with a Shotgun game while perusing the sort of things possible with the game development software "GameSalad", as I was looking for a way to get away from Game Maker and find something that offered the kind of balance of freedom and ease of use that GM was known for. Based upon screenshots, Hobo with a Shotgun seemed to be the standout of the bunch. The graphics are delightfully retro and very reminiscent of a few classic incarnations of Double Dragon, mixed together, and well, it's based on a Rutger Hauer movie. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, sadly.
While very aesthetically pleasing, HwaS plays like a nightmare. Right off the bat, you can tell there's something wrong. For a brawler, you don't really get to "brawl". Other than basic movement, your only actions are "Punch" (actually smack with your shotgun), and to fire your shotgun (which is dependent on your ammo stock). That's it. No dash, no jump, no additional moves... basically the entire game is you plodding around the streets bashing one attack over and over, and occasionally getting to shoot someone. The whole thing feels like a beta version of My First Beat-'Em-Up and I can't fathom paying any price for something like this, let alone the 99 cents they're asking for the iPhone version.
I certainly hope this isn't amongst the best GameSalad has to offer; otherwise, I'm going to go look for something with a little more meat.
