2018 Games

Started the year off with a bunch of games I picked up in Steam's 2017 Winter sale. That turned out to be 100% the wrong decision.

Games I plan to play, not yet on the list:

  • Final Fantasy XV (PC; waiting for gtx 1180 rtx 2080 ti)
  • Catherine: Full Body (PSV? Or PC if that gets announced) (2019)

List items

  • (PC) At long last a proper Valkyria Chronicles sequel on consoles/pc. Essentially VC1 but with new units and minor gameplay tweaks... which may have been introduced in VC2/3... but haven't played those before. Highly recommended!

  • (PC) Quite the ride. Not nearly as scary as Amnesia (1), but the exploration, story, and environment (audio/video effects) made this an experience worth playing through. Recommended!

  • (PC) More of the same, but with larger, better maps.

  • (PC) Got my ass kicked and rage quit. Solid game though.

  • (PC) Killed everyone, on hard mode, without ever bothering to upgrade weapons... no challenge, no reason to be sneaky. meh.

Iffy recommendation. If you just want a game to kill 8-10 hours, this is an okay pick for <$20.

  • (PC) Seems solid, but the beginning is really slow. I stopped around 10 hours in... don't think I'll have the time to get back into this. Indifferent.

  • (PC) Lasted 6 hours on this one. Aside from Tales of Vesperia, I had not played any other "Tales of" game. Vesperia was one I had fond memories of, pouring well over 80 hours into. I don't know if its my tastes that have changed, or Berseria just lacks the same charm as Vesperia, but I couldn't bare with it. I couldn't figure out what buttons were doing what actions, and it just ended up being a button masher in battles. Not being able to jump made world exploration tedious, as the smallest bit of a ledge meant I had to sidetrack all the way around to proceed.

    Not recommended.

  • (PC) Spent 12 hours playing this expecting some change of pace before realizing, things weren't changing. Aspects of previous Metal Gears that I enjoyed, such as boss battles, cut scenes, and dialogue, are all tossed out for this iteration in place for a sandbox of enemy type A, B, C, and 50+ missions of type A or B.

    Not recommended.

  • (PC) Rushed through this one (~3 hours) as its been sitting in my library for years after I picked it up bundled with the first Amnesia. I enjoyed the first and felt it stood well on its own. I didn't really care to get a second serving. The game also seemed to have optimization issues running in 1440p resolution.

    Not recommended.
