2021 Games Played

Getting older and losing the time to play games.

It has been an interesting experience to watch my gaming habits evolve over these past few years. I went from playing all the time and every hot indie/hyped game I could get my hands on to playing games I wanted to play or replaying some of my favorites and let my backlog be damned. I also used to buy games/bundles much more often which resulted in an absolutely bloated backlog of games that would just make me feel guilty when I saw how many games were left unplayed. Not buying as many games in 2020 as I have done before has definitely made me feel better about my gaming habits.

2020 came and went and I realized that I am just not that hyped for upcoming games as I used to be. My Steam wishlist is only 7 games deep and judging by my history, I'll probably get about 5 of them. Looking forward to 2021, I see myself putting more time in my favorites and getting new unexpected games like I always do. Games I am hyped to play in 2021 include Gamedec, Cyberpunk 2077, Total War Warhammer 3, and I look forward to finally finishing Final Fantasy 15. Maybe I can actually do that replay of Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8 as well, I don't know.

  • Easily one of my all time favorite games. I have 530 hours played and I still haven't played every faction or even every race. My newest goal is to play each race in order to determine my top 5 favorite races.

    Yakuza + Dragon Quest = 2 great tastes that taste great together. This may be my favorite Yakuza game ever and definitely my game of the year for 2020.

    Yakuza: Like a Dragon switched from a beat em' up genre to a heavily Dragon Quest inspired JRPG. That means the combat is turn based, there's magic attacks, tag team attacks, and even summons. I absolutely loved this switch and found it all very charming and compelling to play. In the entire game, I fought just about every battle in my way.

    In addition to the new combat system, they also added the job system into the game. The Job system allows your characters to take on different jobs which will add different skills and abilities during battle. These were hit or miss but I did have fun finding the right balance for my party and the DLC classes are worth getting.

    Yakuza games have always had a healthy mix of melodramatic shirtless grown men having a good cry together (after fighting each other first) and ridiculous side story content and this one is no different. I would advise you to explore the world and find as many as you can. The main story does bring out the bullshit in buckets toward the end, but I still really liked it regardless.

    What makes this game special to me are the characters. Ichiban Kasuga is a great protagonist who's main goal in life is to be the Hero from the Dragon Quest games. He's goofy and naïve but also fiercely loyal and supportive of his friends. His friends are all great characters themselves and I found time for all of their interactions on the street or in restaurants. There's a moment around the middle of the game where Ichiban's character really comes through with the help of his friends and it really sold me on Kasuga. There's a point in the story where a 40 year old homeless Ichiban tells his other 40 year old homeless friends that he want's to be a Hero like in a video game and they're all like "Yeah, that sounds normal. Go with it".

    It's all just great and I loved just about everything about this game.

    This game was billed as the spiritual successor to The X-wing/Tie Fighter series. I still rank Tie Fighter as one of my top 10 favorite games of all time so this game has somewhat big shoes to fill. First, they don't make games like they used to so I never expected this game to have a Tie Fighter like single player story. But the feel of the gameplay is what makes it. And man, this game feels good to fly and go pew pew. I only just finished the prologue and I definitely want to see this all the way through. I got this game for $13 and I would have definitely purchased this game for full price.

    Then, I did something I didn't think I would ever do: I played the multiplayer. I thought it was unnecessary when they put it in X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and boy let me tell you about how much fun the multiplayer is. My first game I barely knew the controls and got my space ass handed to me. By the time I played 5 games, I was leading the match in kills and going on sprees. Each of the ships feel different and I am finding favorites already (I'm a stone cold killer in the Tie Defender and the X-Wing). I still have the urge to go back into the multiplayer and I can see myself putting more time into this game throughout the year. This might be my next Battlefied 3 or For Honor.

  • This has been an unexpected surprise for me. In 2020, I put in more time into a Fifa game than I have probably ever. I will continue to play this game off and on throughout the year.

  • A sequel to my most played game of the last 10 years. I don't know if I'll ever put 900 hours into a game again, even if it is CK3. Simply because my personal situation has changed and this is only a better edition of the same basic gameplay of CK2. I'll go back and play this from time to time.

  • I'm in a weird situation with Breakpoint. I did nearly everything worth doing in the game. But I still want to hop into the online Co-op to help other players for an hour or 2 because the game is simply fun to play. I don't really see myself putting too much time into this game this year unless there is a new update because my biggest problem is that there isn't enough to do. Even some sort of random daily mission set would be a welcome addition. We'll see how it goes.

    Don't really know how I feel about this game yet. But I like it? The best way I can describe my experience with this game is conflicted. I like the multiplayer, it's fun and always exciting. However, the base classes feel boring to me and the heroes don't really make me want to learn how to use them well. Add in that every game mode I played featured 20 people versus 20 people all massing towards a few command points with little strategy other than outshoot the other team.

    Because the game had a historically bad launch, the developers bundled many of the cosmetics/heroes into the "celebration edition" which I received for free from Epic. Problem is, that by doing this, they took away much of the progression rewards that might have made me stick around longer. I don't really care for emotes in any game.

    I got this for free and put in about 20 hours. I knew there was a reason why I put off purchasing this game for so long.

    I thought I was done with the Hitman series, but I got caught up in the Hitman 3 hype. As usual, the hype is my weakness. I much prefer my Hitman games to be epidsodic in nature. The game started really strong but I got tired of playing it by the end.

  • Started March 6 - Finished 23

    I'm not usually a fan of these rogue type games. But this one is kinda painless because it doesn't require you to control the action, but the world. And because of its low interactivity, I am not sure how much more time I'll spend on the game.

    In the end, i fell off of this game because of the grind. I was getting no where and lost all interest in continuing.

  • Started (again) April 4 - Finished April 13 (for good this time)

    Decided to pick this up again after uninstalling last November. It's a modern AC game so it's got the loot, the stabbing, and the historical setting. How much you like those elements will dictate how much you like the game as a whole.

    The modern AC games are truly a unique beast. They have a decently long story, some light RPG elements, loot, and various systems that for better or worse complicate the gameplay. Origins might be the better modern AC game simply because it didn't have so many systems to intimidate the player. That is the perfect word for AC Odyssey: intimidating. There's simply too much to do that it gets daunting. I was going to take my time with this game and play at my own pace, but every time the game threw something new at me, I just got tired thinking of all the hoops I'll need to jump through.

    There are mercenaries that are procedurally generated which are elite units who will hunt you down if your fame gets too high. There are cultists in the world which need to be assassinated but some are hidden behind requirements like: destabilize region X, help people in region Y. If you want to track down all cultists, then you literally need to do a bit of everything in the game. There's an inventory upgrade system but I was leveling up so quickly I didn't use it. I saw no point in breaking down my unwanted gear or even selling them. The ship combat from AC 4 returns in this game too, which comes with its own upgrades and systems. There could be more systems in the game too, but I only played it for 20 hours.

    The game simply throws so much at me that when I think of all the stuff I have to do, I just get discouraged. It is a weird thing to say that a game has too much to do, but this one definitely does. This might mean that I am officially done with these games and maybe that's not really a bad thing.

    As far as I can tell, you drive your hovercar through a beautifully created cyberpunk city and deliver packages with some story backdrop. The game is very heavy on setting and light on gameplay. I liked it, but not enough to keep going. I found it to be quite boring to be honest.

    Moving on, no regrets.

  • Started (again) April 17 - can't finish...

    Stellaris was the first Paradox game I bought at launch and before any DLCs. Most Paradox games I've played get much better after the DLCs are released and Stellaris is no exception. At launch, I played the game and bounced off disappointed. I never got the hang of the end game crisis or building a fleet.

    Now, thanks to all the DLCs, this might be one of my current favorite games?

    Next step in my journey to play every Yakuza game and eventually replaying Yakuza LAD. So far so good, I can tell why this is one of the weaker Yakuza games.

    This was a Yakuza game, and while a weaker one, still fun to experience.

    I actually bought this game on Steam last year and played an hour before bouncing off and refunding the game. Now that I got it for free on Epic, I gave it a second shot. And it's really good, I see what the GB staff liked about this game.

    After finishing the game, I agree with the rest of Giant Bomb. this game is great.

    I built a raspberry pi emulator. I wanted to test out the emulator features such as rewind and save states and Streets of Rage was my first choice. It's a classic game and it shows its age, but I had a good time playing through it again.

  • Started July 18 - Finished story mode July 19

    I love that they made a proper sequel to the Streets of Rage games instead of a reboot or remake. This is a modern beat em up game that fits right into the franchise. And even though the beat the main story, I am already coming back to the game to try different characters and the survival mode.

    I went into this game blind, only knowing vaguely that the GB staff loved this game. And man, they were right. This game is great.

    I took me a couple months of starting and stopping this game until I realized that while I liked the setting and story, I couldn't get past the combat. To me, the game wasn't fun to play and I didn't really like the hunting aspect of the game.

    Oh well, time to move on.

    I can't explain it, but I always have this urge to play some other multiplayer or service game whenever I start a new single player experience. Horizon Zero Dawn is a great game, but I'd rather spend my precious time playing a game I can't even finish. Going to be interesting to see what other game I'll be playing when I install Cyberpunk 2077

    Whatever, For Honor is a great fighting game and I found myself playing for 5 hours straight last night. I was rusty at first but I found my groove pretty quick.

    I need to stop blindly buying games based on hype. Especially rogue like games that everyone seems to like for some reason. What got me into the game was the procedural storyline generation and how characters would come back, have kids and live their lives. This part reminded me of Banner Saga in a good way.

    However, I did not like the rogue lite aspect of the game as usual. How many times do I need to waste money before I realize I need to stop buying games like this.

    It's good, but it's not for me.

    This is a side scrolling beat em up that lived and died with its marketing. This game was trying to be so extreme that it even shipped in a red cartridge. Problem is, that the game does not live up to the hype. There were only 4 different bosses in the game and you fought them constantly. In addition to the tedious bosses, the game was needless hard. I'd recommend that people stay away from this one unless you just want to load a cheat and mess around.

    Playing through this again because playing Wildermyth reminded me so much of this game. I finally bought Banner Saga 3 so it's time to get back into it.

    Solid middle chapter. I liked the new unit types and the new upgrade paths for the characters. Eager to finish the story tho.

    You knew it was coming. The Banner Saga is an all time great tactical strategy game. I'd put it up there right with X-Com 2.

    6 year old game, bought 5 years ago and maybe one of the first games on my hypelist. I put this game off long enough, it's time to play through it.

    Apparently, I put this game off for a good reason. Zestiria is a jumbled mess of systems. I could handle the anime story, hell that is why I played the game in the first place. There were 3 types of attacks, each on a counter to another. There were equipment fusions and proficiencies. After about 20 hours, I still had no idea what I was doing or even if what I was doing had any impact on the game. It's when I considered putting the game on automatic combat that I knew I should move on. For my first "Tales of" game in a long time, I was left disappointed.

    Blackthorne has always interested me as one of those rotoscoped games that came out during this era. I loved the animations but never played past the first level. It's time to see what this game is all about.

    Started on the SNES and finished on the 32x (love my new emulation machine), Blackthorne is a game very much of its time. However, its animation priority, slow controls, and uninteresting levels left me wanting more. I am happy that I spent the time to go through this classic.

    Hype scares me; it is dangerous and insidious. Hype will lead to expectations that cannot be met which will eventually breed a toxic atmosphere and outrage. Hype is the reason I preordered the game in July 2019 and then refund it in April 2020. When it comes to new releases I am interested in, I tend to ignore as much marketing as I can so I was left fairly ignorant of what was expected of Cyberpunk 2077 vs what was delivered. However, I am happy that I bought the game again in July of 2021. Cyberpunk 2077 is not the best game ever made, but it is the best game I played this year.

    No game since Skyrim has a game pulled me in like this. The world is simply fantastic. It feels real, cold, dangerous. I spent so much time just walking around and taking pictures and only fast traveled when I was very close to the end game. The amazing thing is that all of this driving around made me enjoy the game more. Night City was built with a sense of verticality that is very impressive; there was always something more to explore. Cyberpunk is meant to be mysterious, gritty, dangerous. It's walking in a city of millions of people and being alone at the same time. It is walking down rain slick streets past faceless people never knowing what is down the next alley. Cyberpunk 2077 nailed the look and feel of a cyberpunk city.

    There is a variety of side missions scattered across the map called Gigs. When you get close to them, you get a call from your fixer about someone that needs to be rescued, something that needs to be stolen, or some jerk that needs to be taken out. It reminded me of one of my favorite games of all time - Shadowrun for the Genesis. It makes sense too! You are a new merc in the city, you need to make a name for yourself and money at the same time. Some of these gigs were very memorable There's no better way to do it than to do these Gigs for Fixers.

    They wrote a perfect cyberpunk story for Cyberpunk 2077. There is no world saving event or great calamity to prepare for. A great cyberpunk story is personal. It is about saving yourself, not saving humanity. They fleshed out the characters in the game in a way that only CDPR could do. You felt connected to some of them by the time you were done with their side missions. There were some moments that were genuinely sad. I also appreciated the modest playtime for the story. If you wanted to, you could probably wrap up the main story in 30 hours. That I spent 100 hours playing the game speaks to how much I didn't want to let it go. And even then, I didn't do all the gigs. The game ended in a classic cyberpunk fashion as well and I plan on coming back to the game when they release more content for it.

    No review for Cyberpunk 2077 can be complete without talking about the bugs. Unfortunately the game is infamous for them. However, no bug I encountered was game breaking or overly annoying. I would see some pop-in of cars or people. I would see floating cars when they should not have been floating. Sometimes there would be items floating in the air. The most annoying bug I found was a UI bug where a line of dialogue subtitle or the enemy hacking you bar would remain on screen unless I quit to menu. That's it. If you can deal with those bugs, then you'll be fine with the game.

    I LOVED this game. Of course I also love cyberpunk as a genre and count cyberpunk games, movies, and novels among my all time favorites. I don't know what was promised or expected of this game prior to release so I can't speak on that topic. But, as of December 2021, the Cyberpunk 2077 game I played ranks among the best cyberpunk games I have ever played.
