Best Sci-fi videogames

As a lot of action/adventure videogames can be shoe-horned into the Sci-fi category, I’ll stick to ones where the label is really descriptive of the overall game, and not just the aesthetics. Despite my love of the Blue Bomber, I don’t think the fact that Mega Man is sometimes in space makes it Sci-fi. They’re mostly current-gen games, not because I don’t love retro-gaming, just simply due to the fact that videogames are technology driven and in general new games are better than old games. Also I don’t play PC games and never really have, so this will be console-centric. Yes, I know StarCraft is supposed to be pretty good, but make your own list if you don’t like it.

List items

  • One of my favorite Sci-fi universes (think new Star Trek on steroids), and ME2 is probably the best game I’ve ever played. When you slog through action sequences just to get to the talking-parts, you know the game is pretty special.

  • I think it’s very hard to argue that this series is not the best single-player FPS ever made, at least from a game-design standpoint. For all the reasons Pete said, and because the White Forest battle at the end of episode 2 might be the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me. Half Life 3 is my most desired unannounced game by far.

  • If you haven’t played it, I assure you it is Sci-fi. Basically it’s Batman set in Renaissance Italy crossed with the Matrix. While it sometimes seems like they’re just making things up as they go, if that’s the case then they’re doing an amazing job of it. Ass:Bro is probably the most technically impressive game I’ve ever seen. If you were turned off by the first game, just trust me on this.

  • An incredibly clever and slick game that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Also one of the few games out there that is genuinely funny. If you think you don’t like videogames, give this one a try.

  • I love the sequel, but I think the original really set the new gold standard for Survival Horror. Yeah, it’s super-derivative, and basically Event Horizon… but who cares, it’s a complete blast. Also there are tons of weapons so it really rewards multiple play-throughs.

  • I know this might be blasphemy, but Prime is the best Metroid game (sorry Super Metroid). As perfect a transition from 2D to 3D as you could hope for, and the only Prime game that wasn’t at all nerfed – this game is hard, and you can get really, really lost. But it all serves to create one of the most immersive game worlds you can find. They re-released this as part of the Prime Trilogy disc on Wii, with motion controls, which is probably the best way to play it if you can find it (I payed 80 dollars for a copy, so good luck).

  • This game is the reason I bought an Xbox and I was not disappointed. Super-stylish, super-creepy and very original, it’s given us some of the most recognizable characters of current-gen games (who doesn’t love little sisters?). Also the many, many kinds of plasmids let you be pretty creative in terms of how you get through the game.

  • Yeah it’s a pretty stupid game. This is one of those cases where I was reticent to put it on the list because the “Sci-fi” aspects are pretty superficial, but I’m going to do it, just because it’s such a kick-ass game. Still the best third-person shooter I’ve ever played in terms of raw game-mechanics – everything feels real solid and hefty, and bullets hit bodies like you’re punching a steak. If you just want to shoot fucking aliens and hear heavy-metal guitar riffs, few games can compare.

  • Generally considered one of, if not THE best SNES JRPG ever made. I don’t think it’s the best, but it is pretty great, and the one that fits the Sci-fi bill the best. It’s got robots and time-travel, so if Dr. Who is Sci-fi then so is this. Tons of endings and a really great cast of characters. It’s pretty unique in that it allows you way more freedom than most RPGs of its time (you can go directly to the final boss almost from the beginning of the game if you want), and there is minimal “grind”. They recently re-released it on the DS, which is the best way to play it (although you may be able to find it for free on something called The Internet).

  • I know this game was over-looked by a lot of people when it came out, but I (and Pete) LOVE it (or at least LIKE LIKE it). Basically a Sci-fi version of Uncharted (in terms of gameplay), set in a colorful and crazy post-apocalyptic future. It’s very tight and focused, and has some of the best voice-acting and facial-animation I’ve seen in a videogame (or CG movie for that matter). Spoiler: the ending is rad. Highly recommended if you find it for cheap (or for not cheap).
