Best of 2010

If 2009 was the year of the multiplayer for me, 2010 brought it back close to home. Only 2 of my final list really consisted of playing a lot of multiplayer, and of those Fifa is a yearly institution. 2010 started out really strong and probably had the most games I've played in a year, yet I still managed to miss out on many I wanted to play (Nier, Bayonetta and Brotherhood spring to mind). Not that the rest of the year had no gems - I had 16 games on here to start with - but considering my number 1 was the first game I played this year, it shows how good that game was.

Notable Mentions

WoW: Catacylsm
Ok yes, it has sucked me in again. A pretty ridiculous amount of changes to the entire game, nearly all for the better. More engaging quests, better rewards and a whoile lot of streamlining of the grind

Ace Attorney: Miles Edgeworth
I love me some Ace Attorney. Edgeworth never quite grabbed me as much as the previous ones, with the lack of trials removing some of the tension. Had a couple of good cases and some excellent character stuff going on (The Yatagarasu reveal was awesome!), but man did that last case go on for far too long.

Persona 3 Portable
Female story and a whole load of additions on one of my favourite RPGs ever? Sure!

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
The usual praise here. Fantastic characters and acting and a well-written story with decent combat/level design. I had the ending sort of spoiled for me beforehand, but that ending left way, way too many plotholes.

Rock Band 3
If this had been out last year it'd be top 2 or 3. The game's good. Really good. But I havent been able to play as much of it as I'd like.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Considering I had AC2 2nd last year, this should be near the top but I've only managed 3 or 4 hours so far. Shame, because it's fantastic so far.

Pokémon Heart Gold
NOSTAAAAALGIAAAAA. The Pokéwalker is an amazing tool too, I must've took that to work for months on end.

List items

  • Well, yeah. One of the most tense and cinematic finales to a video game that I've ever played. Most "Hell Yeah!" moments in a game this year. One of the best characters in a game I've ever played. Superb soundtrack. Jennifer Hale. Bring on Mass Effect 3.

  • I hate myself, so I love Super Meat Boy. Charming, funny, tight controls and a great example of the 'JUST ONE MORE GO...' feeling. The music never stops, the levels fly one after the other and it's balls hard while never obscenely frustrating.

  • So yes, it uses a whole load of Zelda-isms but it's done really, really well (after the first 30 minutes or so). There's a plot that isn't completely stupid, a reasonably varied combat-system, a well-designed world and it even somehow manages to put in a freakin' PORTAL GUN. It was fun!

  • Probably the first SRPG I've ever liked. Released around FFXII's grand arrival it offered exactly the opposite. Quick cutscene, you're in. Go. Hell you can even have a battle before you get to the place with the tutorial. A very clever battle system that was satisfying to master, a ludicrous gun customisation system that rewarded inventive tetris-thinking and never being too heavy handed with the plot almost to a fault. Plus Nolan North and Scott Menville! The only game this year I 1000/1000ed.

  • The game was broken, but I broke the crap out of it and enjoyed it. The dialogue, plot and the decision-making well overshadowed the game's flaws for me. It was never going to live up to the delays and coming out in the huge shadow of ME2. But if Bioware used the same effort as Obsidian did I'd probably have my perfect game.

Refreshing to see a good spy game that didn't devolve into Bourne-fighting or vanilla stealth.

  • Autolog is ingenious and also terrible for my competetive side. In the parts when I managed to let it go (and EA liked kicking me off their servers) I loved the pure races/chases combined with the Road-Rage style from Burnout. The last Racer event being a 15-minute lap around the entire map with freaky awesome lightning was sweet.

  • I really, really liked Split/Second. Even the repetition of the power plays didn't bother me too much. It was slick, had a good level of challenge, inventive (I got to shoot missiles at Helicopters!) and filled my Burnout needs until NFS showed up. Also a racing game having a crazy plot twist was much funnier than it should've been.

  • It's Golden Sun! It has the same combat system! It has more Djinni! It's a JRPG! It's Golden Sun I waited so long for this I'm totally happy!

  • Professor Layton games are not meant to make me cry! He's a perfect gentleman, he's not meant to lose his composure and OH GOD THAT ENDING WAS SO DEPRESSING AND GOOD :( :(

  • So many little improvements. Better clubs interface and lobby, pro passing, less retarded goalkeepers, traits, be a goalie, FREE Ultimate Team. But that first month with the horrendous servers and lag? Hugely disappointing and nearly soured so much of the game. Oh and the 'Control opponents team' glitch from LAST YEAR still didnt get fixed until recently. I love Fifa so, and this years is the best so far, but that was a rocky start
