My favorite games from this Generation.

The PS4's release date is near so it seemed appropriate to talk about some of my favorite games from this generation. It'd be extremely difficult to come up with a list of my top ten games of this generation but I will let you know some of my favorite games from this generation. So let's kick it off with a game that hopefully everyone has played by now.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

If I were to name my game of the generation It'd probably be this game. The level design in SMG2 is top notch with tons of creativity oozing out from every level. I picked it over SMG due to how difficult some of the levels in the sequel can be. It's also an accomplishment to be impressive visually on the Wii when it wasn't even in HD. SMG2 proved that gameplay is ultimately the most important thing about games. The new Yoshi levels were also a blast and something that made SMG2 better than the first one. SMG2 is a game that everyone should play since it's why I fell in love with games in the first place. It's pure fun that only Nintendo can provide.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

I've always been a huge FPS shooter guy with games like Quake, Halo, and Battlefield being multiplayer games that I spent a lot of time on. Modern Warfare is one of those games that changed everything. While Call of Duty isn't beloved as it used to be MW was truly innovative at it's time. With exp being a big deal online and the perk system being wholly unique it dominated the gaming landscape with fun gameplay and addictive RPG hooks. The systems that MW weren't original but when combined with the frantic fast face of the multiplayer matches it created a captivating multiplayer experience. MW devoured my whole life for a couple of weeks as I kept trying to unlock everything that it had. The map design was also great as each one was memorable in it's own right. The single player was also an added bonus of fun with a bombastic campaign with many memorable moments. I'm sure we all still remember how shocking the nuclear bomb scene was.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

This game was the reason why I had to own a PS3. It was one of those games that made me realize how games had changed into narrative focused story games that also had good gameplay. The story wasn't unique in any way but it was how well it was told with a great cast of characters. The actors truly changed the dialogue and cut scenes in the game as the graphics made them come to life. The level design and crazy set pieces also made it stand out above every other game. I still remember how my mind was blown away by the building falling while still shooting enemies moment. Uncharted 2 was a great way to start off my time with the PS3. I should also mention that the multiplayer was great in it's own right. I still prefer Uncharted 3's multiplayer over it though.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

I'm a big Phoenix Wright fan so I knew that I'd probably like Ghost Trick. I came out loving my time with Ghost Trick as it still has one of my favorite art styles from any game. The story in Ghost Trick is a fascinating one that only the minds of the Phoenix Wright writes could come up with. It's filled with great characters but the only one that really matters is Missile. The gameplay is also surprisingly great with being able to manipulate objects as a ghost. Solving the game's puzzles in a set amount of time also created a lot of tension which is rare in puzzle games. The soundtrack is still stuck in my head to this day. Go play Ghost Trick.

Bastion

Bastion is a game that I would say is pretty much perfect. It has great combat that is designed brilliantly. Each weapon in the game is viable in it's own way. There are many different enemies that make combat in the challenging and fun. The combat in general feels great with impressive visuals. The art style truly made Bastion feel like something that was unlike any other game. The soundtrack is one that is very special to me and is still in my head. The story of Bastion isn't clear as it doesn't try to tell you everything about it's universe. It gives you enough to go on in order to keep playing. The narrator is also a great way to tell the story without needing cut scenes or anything that stops you from controlling your character. It's a game that respects you enough to tell you the importance of the story yet letting you ignore it entirely by just playing the game without being force feed the story. Bastion is a highly polished game that was just made by a small amount of people. Hopefully Transistor can overcome my lofty expectations.

I have many more favorite games from my generation but for now theses are at the top of my list. Be sure to share some of your favorite games from the generation below and let's remember this generation on good terms!

Fav games this gen... good idea! :)

Operation Rainfall games - Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower, The Last Story

This is a cheat but i don't care, i got these all because of all the coverage and loved each for different reason, Xenoblade for gameplay, The Last Story for characters and Pandora's Tower for atmosphere. All stories are cool though.

Batman Arkham City

This is a comic book fans wet dream the gameplay was better, the story was better and so was all the references. It was pretty bold killing of Hami-- I mean Joker.

No More Heroes 1+2

Cheating but these games side by side are great fun, the self awareness is well done IMO and the combat is just varied enough not to be repetitive, the characters are awesome too. Even if they're all terrible people.

Street Fighter 4 (and the rest)

Mostly for what it did to the fighting scene and for allowing me and my brother to play a fighting game together for the first time in years, it revitalised the genre and the fans.

Mass Effect 2

The first in the series i'd played and my fav since, It's funny i found it very newcomer friendly as i knew next to nothing about the series but i easily got into it the combat was cool the story interesting the only down side was the final boss.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom

The best vs game and it's a crime it won't a sequel, the controls are tighter, the story more crazy and Frank West nose makes him look Turkish :P it feels so much better than MvC3 which feels unbelievably loose and unresponsive at times or just plain hard to follow.

Borderlands 2

Crazy shooting fun with a better sense of humour than Max Payne 3 this is also the first in the series I played and i'm impressed, this game can piss you off just enough that you want to keep playing and find more loot. I'm not a big fan of FPS's but this game gave me a new outlook on the genre.

That's it so far, when i finish (and play) Ni No Kuni i might add that.
