It sounds like Mark MacDonald didn't know about the Xbox One-Eighty at the time of recording. :/ Still hilarious to hear him talk about the e3 Sony knockout punch.

Enjoyed the FFXIV talk. The beta has been great and I like that it's appreciably different from WoW in tone, aesthetic, and in some ways content (or at least its presentation of content). The writing's great and lays off pop-culture references for the most part. Some of the systems seem a little convoluted, but I like learning all the idosyncrises. Perhaps a little unfortunately, it seems like a hard game to "jump into and go". I really like that you have to work a little to unlock stuff like changing classes or guildleves/hests or airship travel, but I'm sure there are people who will want everything unlocked right away from level 1. The community also seems pretty friendly and helpful in general.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I had gotten the impression they where going to do a show together with GiantBomb at E3.

What happened to that, mind you I haven't actually listened to the Podcast yet...

I guess a lot of things didn't go as planned this E3.

Too bad, I was really looking forward to that.

... 1 hour in:

FYI, RYSE is not a "Quick Time Event" game, according to the developers and some journos, who actually played it. The game just "demo'd" poorly during the Microsoft Conference.

People who played it say, it has a more Batman Arkham games fighting system vibe. The button prompts on screen can be turned off. They are visible during times to notify you how/when you can make some 'perfect moves'. If you don't hit the timing right, shit still happens, and the game goes on, but you might miss some 'finishing' move stylish kill, according to the devs.

======

... on another note, I recommend playing Dark Souls on PC, not only using the DSFix, but t w e a k i n g it to the max, if you have the hardware for it! Super Sampling Anti Aliasing, turn up Depth of Field, play in 1080p or 1600p ... and be awed.

People seem to talk about Dark Souls 'graphics' only knowing their PS3/Xbox versions (granted, they mostly talked about DS2 in this podcast).

======

Also, PCs can show you right now, how games can look (and play!) like on these next-gen consoles? I heard, many PS4 demos on the floor during E3 ran on PCs. The fun part is, no console can keep up with the PC! The important question is: "where is the innovation going to happen?" - "Where are the games?"

In the end, "hardware is only good enough as the software, that runs on it."

The REAL winner of E3 2013 is the PC?

I am playing on x86 architecture since 1983. From millions of "non-gamers" playing browser based games, Facebook games, etc, etc, to the 'real' hardcore simulation fans, who are playing their Train and Flight Simulators on 6 screens and custom made controls, to the war-gaming, turn-based strategy game fans, who play obscure titles, no game journalist would ever touch, too afraid or not knowing how, to the innovations, like Oculus Rift (EVE-VR), or playing Arma 3 Alpha community scenarios, with TrackIR, commanding your squad with voice commands, or playing Skyrim PC Mods with GlovePIE, enabling to use a Wii nunchuck to swing their Skyrim swords, to the eSports leagues to the Leagues of Legends and F2P games, etc, etc, etc ... and I didn't mention Steam & their PhD economist.

Indies come from PC. Look at all the things on Desura, ModDB, Nexus, etc or numerous Indie games websites.

From Cart Life to DayZ ... PC is where gaming is at? But I love me some real CONSOLE WARS. It's my Fantasy Football.

@buckybit: Actually, Jeff and a few of the other Bombers disagree with your statement. They all said it basically was just boring and mostly quick time BS.

I don't know how anyone believes Microsoft in regards to what really was in the family plan. They also said you couldn't just turn off the stuff people were complaining about but then they did just turn it off.

@ericsmith but it'd take me a whole minute and a half to download it ... heh heh. There's plenty of solution that involve no work on GB part, but it's still damn annoying I keep messing up using the GB player.

I don't mean to be negative (actually I do), but an 8-4 play podcast without JJ or John is not an 8-4 play podcast.

Sorry MarkMacD and guests. I'm keeping those 3 hours of my life, this time.

Also I've already listened to analysation of E3 many times since (you guys may be late to the party).

Mark McDonald needs to stop talking over his one-time guests. Ryan Payton and Jake had some great stuff to say about Nintendo, and yet Mark derails it whenever he feels uncomfortable about what is being said (are Nintendo a possible customer for 8-4? Don't they have Treehouse?). Maybe its just Mark's personal passion, however, I love this podcast and I feel like this edition was compromised in this way.

Edit: It's not just a Nintendo thing, he talks over them every time they talk for a decent amount of time....:(

The order wasn't really CG was it? I thought it was in engine cutscenes and not CGI.

Also, Watchdogs did not get the biggest applause. From what I've heard at several outlets the biggest pop was for Destiny and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Bungie will bring back smart enemies to fight against (well, in context) as 343i totally failed with Halo 4 imo. All the enemies were typical FPS fodder and the new enemies were dumber than even they were. 343i killed any interest I had in Halo, sadly.

Microsoft on software side had nothing to interest me outside of maybe TitanFall. Sony, pretty much every game shown had me wanting to play it outside of GT6. Listening to Ryan Payton talk about the Sony presser oddly felt like he was upset the conferences were so different and Sony's went over so well as he kept naysaying almost anything positive someone said.

The Alienware set top boxes are incredibly expensive for the cheap ass parts included inside. Steam boxes will only be marketable to people who are currently wanting a Steam box, aka a person who must not PC game already.

Lastly, Sony was using PS4s on the floor at E3. Giant Bombers confirmed this. Microsoft however was caught having boxes that looked like they were floor models but they really were Windows 7 PCs as several Xbones crashed during the show and they booted to a Windows 7 start screen. There are pictures showing this several places.

Still listening to the podcast myself, but for those of you who are curious about the song that plays during the intermission, it's an iconic promotional song that was released in Japan for the original Pikmin on the GameCube. And I don't use the word "iconic" lightly, either, as it garnered mainstream popularity for a while after its release. I'm not good at song translation, but I will say that the original Japanese lyrics are beautiful, yet poignant and wistful, making for a superb compliment to the game in my book. To this day, it's the first suggestion for Pikmin if you look it up on Japanese on YouTube.

I've embedded it below for posterity's sake. The title is "Ai no Uta," which could be translated as "A Love Song," "Song of Love," or anything along those sorts of lines.

Am I the only one that thinks people's reticence for having a Kinect because it might be used to spy on them a little silly? I've had one plugged in for the last year and a half and that worry has never crossed my mind. All in all the voice command stuff is a big convenience if you're using Netflix and if that means J. Allard might be staring at my wiener as I change I say all the better.

The Order 1866 thing wasn't CG, it was in-engine according to Seth Killian and others involved with the game and personally looking at the direct feed of the trailer, it's clearly not CG.

Are you dense? Because it's pretty obvious from the second they mention it that he keeps saying "We'll talk about the Xbox DRM changes later", and then sure enough they talk about it later.

I assume you made this comment when you were like 2 minutes into the podcast, but even then it's obvious that Mark is intentionally asking for what people's reactions were at the time of E3, then afterwards he separately gets everyone's reactions to the Xbox One policy reversal.

The first part started to get a bit grating. A clash of egos. Mark was trolling his guests too hard on everything.
