Unfinished: Trials Rising 08/22/2018

Video games are hard

If crashing across checkpoints didn't count, I would have thrown a few more controllers, and I would never play Trials again.

Trials is one of the few games / series, I'm actually good at. I remember spending days on the extreme tracks in Evolution, trying to get through them all without faults. Also, getting platinum medals on every track is rough.

Trials Evolution is the greatest platformer of all time.

Now this is a game of Skill. On a previous Trials (don't remember which) I put down so many hours on that that I knew most of the extreme jumps by memory. It helped to have a friend that actually did TRIAL for a hobby who taught me basically when to "Gas" or when to "Jump"

Hmm, I would love to play new Trials and ditching the trick system sounds good to me, but it looks like they still have that horrendous and constant texture pop-in problem, I don't understand that. You rarely see that these days, I feel like that problem was solved years ago. And these are mostly static courses, nothing that should be too demanding on the hardware. Also there are plenty of framerate dips, but hey, it's unfinished so let's see if they can iron these issues out before release.

Those extreme tracks are real fuckers. Major props if you did any of them without faults; they're tough enough to just complete. Every checkpoint that required a perfect load-spring with the squirrely bike killed a tiny portion of my soul.

I didn't really think it possible before watching this video, but I actually do want to play more Trails now.

I love Trials. You can definitely see the stages of frustration with a section at 8 minutes here:

1) Attempt once and fail.

2) Attempt honestly, trying slightly different techniques each time, and continue to fail.

3) Try one thing over and over that you think should work but doesn't work and fail.

4) Go full speed despite knowing it won't work because you're upset and fail.

5) Collect yourself and try some more new things and fail.

6) Start the track over and get it on the first try, not quite knowing what you did differently.

I like that your medal is based on time and not the number of faults. I'll probably still work on getting perfect runs down but it won't be as bad as in Evolution and Fusion.

I don't remember seeing real brands in previous Trials games.

@osmos: I was about to post this article when I heard Ben talking about the easter eggs. It's crazy.

More power to you all but man, I loathe Trials. I’ve tried to like these games but I just don’t get it. They’re so tedious and repetitive it kind of makes my skin crawl. To each their own though. I like a bunch of shit most people hate. Maybe I just have bad taste.

This looks alright.

I don't know if I like the time penalty system, but I guess the fake multiplayer demands it.

Always kind of blown away at how much art is in these games, so many levels have one-off assets/themes it must take so much time to put it all together.

"Noch in Entwicklung" means "Still in development".

More Trials looks fun.

Really glad to hear tricks are out. Always thought it was dumb to muddle the game with something that distracts from the actual platforming aspect of it, which is what I personally find enjoyable about Trials.

I also find it weird that people equate Trials with anger and frustration, I found the game relaxing. I'd get entranced with Evolution just practicing courses over and over again to try to shave off seconds. Like sure, Trials can be frustrating sometimes when courses ask you to do things you don't know how to do, but I enjoyed trying to figure out how to get past obstacles that didn't seem possible to get through at first.

I love Trials, and I'm ready for this! I've played quite a bit of Fusion, but nowhere near as much as I played Evolution. I think this one will consume my life a bit.

These are... the worst games to watch someone else play. I was underwhelmed by Fusion, but I'm totally down for a back-to-basics Trials game. Especially since Evolution still isn't backward compatible.

Watching Ben fail on the same obstacle 30 times in a row is exactly what I needed to see from a Trials game. It's enough to remind me why I stopped playing Trials.

I hope this one will have a grrreat main theme as well.

Looks fine, but it does feel like they're out of fresh ideas. Also seems like Ben & Brad scrubbed their memory of the 80's themed trials game.
