How do I judge an Unreal Engine game/demo when things aren't wet and shiny with loads of texture pop-in? Like trying to determine a wrestling game's graphical prowess without Triple H's long hair. Jokes aside, I look forward to seeing a new Batman game in this engine.

That's a pretty amazing looking demo. If that stuff can be done in real time this next generation, it'll be hella impresive

Man, I hope this new engine stuff is immediately made available to non-developers to play with in UDK. All the new tools in Unreal Engine 4 look fantastic (despite Epic's art style being boring as always). I suspect us amateurs will have to enjoy ourselves with UE3 for a few years more though.

God, I really hope the Unreal engine doesn't become as popular on this new generation as it was the best and the worst thing to happen on the previous one. It allowed easier development (ish) between platforms but god-damn how bad games looked with constant bloody texture pop ins and everything looking like shiny plastic.

This new engine looks great at a distance but zoom in and you can still see the jagged edges and textures still looking a bit plastically though not as bad.

Part of that is because game developers have to assume some people have older, weaker computers. They can't just make the best engine possible and have everything cranked to 11; the games wouldn't run on old computers (the current consoles, being as old as they are, also fall into that category), and consequently, they wouldn't sell. With this newer engine, it seems like it would be much easier to create low-rez and high-rez versions of art assets and swap them on-the-fly as necessary. We're talking about real-time graphics, not pre-rendered, so I'll put up with a loss of fidelity around the edges if it makes the frame-rate more consistent. My one hope for Unreal 4 is that it will allow larger levels with wider, more open spaces. Fewer loading screens and corridors, please.

@ultraboi: Texture pop in should not be an issue anymore with the vast amounts of RAM in these systems. Especially with the super fast RAM on PS4 I just can't imagine texture streaming being a problem again. As for plastic looking characters, it was an issue early on but a lot of games since have really improved upon the skin shaders and a developer could build its own skin shader if the built in one wasn't working. Look at Bioshock Infinite as an example. Elizabeth doesn't look like plastic. As for the jagged edges, that is simply a matter of AA. It doesn't matter what engine you use. More AA means less jaggies. If you play Batman on PC for example you can turn the AA up to the maximum supported by Nvidia graphics cards straight from the game and doing so will eliminate every jaggie on screen. You also need a Titan to make that actually happen but it is possible.

It's hard to make up whether there is an "old fashioned" texture pop-up at the end of the hall in 1:10. Anyway hope this piece of software is well worth its value in the end.

Hooray the end of dumb normal maps that make everything look like polished chrome. I hope character skin has vastly improved too so we don't have any more waxy plastic-looking characters in games anymore. Arkham Asylum and City would have looked so much nicer if the character were modeled using better maps.

I don't think we need to worry about gritty, grey and brown shooters going away though.

Why is this under "Events"? This belongs to "Trailers" since GB people aren't involved with this video.
