What are your top 10 Favorite movies of all time?
1. John Carpenter’s The Thing
I love horror movies, but rarely do they work on so many levels as The Thing. It has tension, gore, physiological horror, and a palpating since of isolation and dread. No one, least of all the audience, knows who is who, or how the story will end which is such a rare thing in films.
2. Seven Samurai
I’m ashamed to say, the only Akira Kurosawa film I have seen. I can’t wait to watch his other films.
3. Hot Fuzz
The most perfect film on this list on a technical level. The pacing, editing, directing, acting, all top notch.
4. Castle in the Sky
I love all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, but this one stays with me the most. It feels magical, and heartfelt, like all of his movies, but I think it has the best action he’s ever done, and the best villain in Mark Hamill’s character Muska.
5. Conan the Barbarian
I think that Conan gets underrated as a film. The cinematography is grandiose; I’d argue one of the best scores ever. Take out the dialog, and this movie works amazingly well as a silent film as well.
6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The funniest movie I’ve ever seen, though it’s been far too long since I’ve seen it. More of a collection of sketches than a film, but an absolutely brilliant film that has left the biggest mark on pop culture of this list.
7. Braveheart
Like most movies it plays fast and loose with history. That doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a powerful, exhilarating, and heart breaking film.
8. Dragon Heart
My ‘guilty pleasure’ movie. I love everything about it, and it made such an impact on me as a kid. A knight is sworn to valor! His heart knows only virtue!
9. No Direction Home
My favorite documentary of my favorite musician. A fascinating folk hero enigma, that defies that and all other classifications.
10. Schindler’s List / The Sea Hawk
A strange set of films to pair, but both are films that I watch once a year. One I watch to remember, one I watch to forget.
Seeing this thread pop up again I was surprised to see that my top 10 is almost entirely unchanged after four years. I think I'd only consider changing one of them.
Oh man, I can't remember ever writing a top ten movies list. I'll just brain fart out some things I like off the top of my head. Subject to change and in no particular order, hell, might not even be ten of them.
- Forrest Gump
- The Big Lebowski
- Pulp Fiction
- Reservoir Dogs
- Goodfellas
- The Good the Bad and the Ugly
- Snatch
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
- Rain Man
- Enemy at the Gates

Skimming through this thread, I realize I could never narrow it down to 10, so many good movies, I'm really surprised nobody mentioned Aladdin, or any Disney movies at all.
I have seen too many good movies to distill it down to 10. I can name 10 movies that I really like, but I'll be ommiting like 50 others that deserve a spot.
Just a random sampling I guess:
- Terminator 2
- Saving Private Ryan
- Shaun of the Dead
- Superbad
- John Carpenter's The Thing
- Drive
- Goodfellas
- Finding Nemo
- Any Jackie Chan movie (like a top 20 in itself)
- Heat
- Rocky
shit that's already too much...too many good movies.
I'm going to name the first ten movies I love that pop into my head! If they're the first ones, they must be the best right?
Brick, The Royal Tenenbaums, Wayne's World, Reservoir Dogs, Back to The Future, Inception, The Silence of The Lambs, Nausicaa of The Valley of The Winds, Shutter Island, and O Brother Where Art Thou.
Pretty decent list I guess. I'm sure I'm forgetting some awesome ones.
Edit: Fuck, Die Hard!
My top two for years has been
- Back To The Future
- George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead
The rest of my list has no particular order nor do they have a dedicated spot. I always go back and forth on this subject
- Stand By Me
- Alien/Aliens (hard to choose between the two. Alien is one of the best horror movies and Aliens one of the best action movies)
- Drive
- Battle Royale
- Pulp Fiction
- The Wizard of Oz
- Anchorman
- Cool Hand Luke
I think that's a good list. I didn't put too much time thinking about this so I'm sure I'm missing some.
I'm not having a particularly good taste in movies but:
Star Wars IV-VI (Yep, I'm sorry. Actually I'm not)The Green Mile
Shoot'em'Up
Idiocracy
The Lion King (come on, I watched it countless times as I kid, I HAVE to mention it)
Die Hard
Alien
Hot Fuzz
errr...I can't think of anything else right now.
1) The Terminator
Possibly the greatest movie of all time. It had everything. Action, car chases, robots, time travel, sex, a great indy feel to it, naked Schwarzenegger, guns, romance. It was an amazing achievement.
2) Terminator 2. Take the first movie, take out the sex and replace it with more Schwarzenegger lines and Guns N Roses and you have the best sequel of all time.
3) Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Romance and character driven plot made this the best movie of the trilogy.
4) Training Day. A movie that has a quote for every situation. Denzel shows that his best roles are as the bad guy.
5) The Godfather. A masterpiece and while I feel like the action is awesome, this is really a family piece. The dynamics of the Corleone family are the real meat of this movie.
6) Dumb and Dumber. There is no funnier movie. Period. We landed on the moon!
7) First Blood (aka Rambo 1) This is a much different movie than what we got later from Stallone. It shows us the difficulty that veterans have going to back to society. It also satisfies action fans, especially the scene where Rambo takes down the hick cops one by one in the forest. The end scene where Rambo exclaims that he used to fly copters and drive tanks but can't keep a job as a valet. It was sad. Also of note, is that Rambo never kills anyone in this movie.
8) Superman. While many love the Dark Knight, this movie is the best super hero movie ever made. You believe in Christopher Reeve as Superman. His mannerisms, his look. He is superman. Lex Luthor, though quirky and goofy at times, he shows he is truly evil.
9) Beverly Hills Cop. The music, the laughs and knowing that Victor Maitlin is out there is enough to get anyone to watch this movie.
10) True Lies. A great spy movie that has one liners all over the place and Arnold in his last truely great movie.
Here we go
- The Terminator
- Terminator 2
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Die Hard
- Back to the Future
- The Dark Knight
- True Lies
- Pulp Fiction
- Training Day
- Chasing Amy
Hey not bad, you're fairly consistent for 2 posts separated by over 3 years.
Tons of The Dark Knight from lists from 3-4 years ago. I'm not sure i would have agreed with that back then, not because the movie isn't good but because is was too recent. You need to let a movie sink in for a couple of years to really know if you'll still appreciate it as much a couple years down the line. In any case, 5 years later i think The Dark Knight passed that test.
Alright, here goes (Not necessarily in order after the top 3):
- Terminator 2
- Heat
- The Dark Knight
- A New Hope (Or The Empires Strike Back or Return of the Jedi really. I'm limiting it to one per franchise for the top 10)
- The Two Towers (This one is without a doubt my favorite of the 3.)
- The Matrix
- Patlabor 2
- Rocky IV (Best training montage of the series!)
- The Professional
- Mission Impossible
It really was a toss up between Mission Impossible and Cape Fear for the last spot.
I also only recently started watching Miyazaki's work. I loved Princess Mononoke and hated Spirited Away. Next on the list is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. If i like it even better than Princess Mononoke it could crack the top 10.
In no order.
- Back to the future Part 1
- Ghostbusters 1
- The good, the bad, the ugly
- The Conversation
- Vertigo
- Spartacus
- The Sting
- Lion King
- The Great Escape
- Groundhog day
I know this thread is old, but looking through this lists made me compelled to try to make a top ten xD. It is just too hard, I love films for so many different quallities, compelling acting roles, kinetic cinematography, general pacing and great story, subtleties like visual metaphors or ironies and less subtle saturated visual themes.. argh it's so hard xD, I dumped just a few of my faviourite films, probably in other lists and I haven't included all just the ones I'm familiar enough with to be sure as worthy of a best list.

Somehow I just can't resist when there are lists to be made...so, in no particular order (although Heat probably is No. 1)
Heat
The Great Escape
The Big Lebowski
The Dirty Dozen
Escape From New York
A Bridge Too Far
Mr. Majestyk
Midnight Run
The Magnificent Seven
Once Upon a Time in the West
Well, there's definitely more, but these are mostly movies I rewatch every year.

- Barry Lyndon // Stanley Kubrick 1975
- The Conversation // Francis Coppola 1974

Alright here goes. Off the head.
1. As Good As It Gets
2. High Fidelity
3. American Beauty
4. When Harry Met Sally
5. Annie Hall
6. Animal House
7. Brick
8. Network
9. Almost Famous
10. The Ref
My favorite movies make my brain laugh and my heart yearn. The second half of this list might switch around but I feel like that top 3 is pretty defining of me.
Super High five to all of John Carpenters The Thing fans I'm seeing.
In no particular order besides what came to my mind first.
1. John Carpenters The Thing.
2. Moon.
3. Everything is Illuminated.
4. Sunshine.
5. The Shining.
6. The Raid: Redemption. Tied with, Dredd.
7. Children of Men.
8. The Fifth Element.
9. The Dark Knight
10. Aliens.
It's possible that Repo Man has surpassed the Godfather as my favorite of all time.
As a fan of punk music, it was quite a treat to watch.
Order they appear in my brain as I think on it
- Yojimbo
- Seven Samurai
- Love and Death
- The Producers (Original with Zero Mostel)
- Alien
- Buffalo 66
- Oldboy (Original with Min-sik Choi)
- Seven
- The Big Lebowski
- 2001
that is 10 but I could probably pick another 10 instead if given more thought :D Yojimbo would stay on that list though.
I always find this tough because I can't always lock down the order. Something like this:
1. Dumb and Dumber - I have seen this movie enough times that it shouldn't be funny any more, but every time I still end up laughing my ass off. 2. A Scanner Darkly - A great mix of comedy and drama, paired with some crazy animation and excellent performances by Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Keanu Reeves.
3. Blade Runner - The classic Ridley Scott film that defined Cyberpunk. And that soundtrack.
4. Star Wars V - The best film in the greatest movie franchise to ever exist. Also, something about someone's father sticks out for some reason...
5. The Matrix - I also love Reloaded, but I went into the first film knowing nothing about it, and did not expect what followed. The only knock against it is that everyone needed to have bullet-time in their films after The Matrix came out.
6. Constantine - Peter Stormare as Satan. Scene stealing at its finest.
7.Saving Private Ryan - While some may argue, in my opinion it is the greatest war movie of all time. That scene with the medic...
8. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - I think the strongest of the 3 films, with excellent performances across the board.
9. End of Watch - An odd film because of the way it was shot and how it tends to jump from action to drama to comedy. At the same time, I'm not sure I've seen a better on screen partnership than that portrayed by Gyllenhaal and Pena. Heartbreaking lines at the end.
10. Cloud Atlas - Some people find it difficult to follow, but I really connected with the story and the characters. The most recent movie to really grab me.
- The Good The Bad & The Ugly (Leone)
- Ugetsu Monogatari (Mizoguchi)
- Rosemary's Baby (Polanski)
- Vertigo (Hitchcock)
- Rashomon (Kurosawa)
- The Shining (Kubrick)
- Jean De Florette/Manon des Sources (Berri)
- Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (Nichols)
- The Wicker Man (Hardy)
- Dead Man (Jarmusch)
Probably something I'm missing but yeah I'm ok with this list.
This will most likely be embarrassing.
1. The Crow
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Ghost World
4. Bladerunner
5. Toy Story
6. Donnie Darko
7. Star Wars (I am including the original trilogy in this, I don't care if it is technically three movies)
8. Lords of the Rings (ditto the above statement)
9. Little Miss Sunshine
10. Fight Club (or Rebecca or Requiem for a Dream or Addams Family Values or A Year Ago in Winter)
- Young Frankenstein
- Bladerunner
- Paths of Glory

- The Shining
- Alien
- The Godfather I&II
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
