Fantasy Zone was first released in arcades in 1985, developed and published by Sega. Over the years, the original Fantasy Zone would be ported to a huge variety of systems, including the NES, TurboGrafx-16, Sega Master System, PlayStation 2 and Wii Virtual Console. In 1987, Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa-Opa was released in the arcades and the Sega Master System. This installment was bit less of success than the original and was later ported to Famicom and MSX. In the same year, Fantasy Zone: The Maze was released as a spin-off for the series. The game mixed the classic scrolling shooting action of the series with Pac-Man like maze gameplay. The Maze was also never released outside of Japan. In 1991, Fantasy Zone Gear was released as a Game Gear exclusive installment in the series. Overall, the game was very similar to the original Fantasy Zone. The next year, the first and only console-exclusive Fantasy Zone title was released, Super Fantasy Zone for the Sega Mega Drive. Super Fantasy Zone was the first Fantasy Zone title to be released in the United States since the original when 16 years later, the title was ported to the Wii Virtual Console.
