^^^ Yeah that happened to me when I tried to recruit Chagrin (that little yellow mole thing). He was a level or two higher and he summoned a Gryphon instead to join. I wonder if the monster they summon is random or a specific one associated with each one.
It seems like it might just randomly choose a demon that you have encountered before but isn't already in your party. I encountered this exact same situation (tried to recruit a higher-leveled Chagrin), but he gave me a Lham Dearg (warrior demon with arrows and swords stuck in his body). I had just about every other demon that I had already seen in my party at that point.
I've received double my order from two different companies within the same month; it was bizarre.
First was from amazon.ca, so I ended up with Deathsmiles LE x2, Ys Seven LE x2, and Metroid Prime: Other M x2. Second was from hospitalrecords.com, in which I got my 5 CD order x2.

My PS3 won't recognize the disc, but that probably because I have a North American PS3 and a Japanese copy of the game. I have to resort to swapping it with a North American PS1 game on my PS2 to get it to run.
