GOTY 2022

In 2022 I was busy with a lot of personal projects and wasn't able to play as many games I would have liked. However, these are my top 6.

Here are my lists from previous years:

List items

  • I didn't manage to finish Xenoblade 3 this year but I spent almost 100 hours playing the RPG and it was hands down my favorite game I experienced in 2022. I've played every entry in the Xenoblade series and, while there are installments I love, it always felt like each game had some weird system or odd design choice that prevented the games from being truly top tier in my mind. Xenoblade 3, in many ways, feels like the entire franchise was leading to this game with the dev team taking everything they learned from past games to polish the Xenoblade formula to a shine. The opening hours of the game were amazingly well paced, the main cast is lovable, and the gameplay feels intelligently streamlined compared to past games. Heck, I even enjoyed the side-quests which I seldom interacted with in previous entries. Great game. Someday I'll finish it.

  • I enjoyed the original Somnium Files but I also had a lot of issues with it. The sequel did everything a good sequel should, further polishing its good qualities while improving on its flaws. Had an amazing time playing the Nirvana Initiative and it's one of my favorite adventure games I've played in years.

  • I'm a big Kirby fan but Forgotten Land really was a cut above the rest. There is just so much creativity going on in this game that it left me smiling at every corner. Everything just feels so well crafted and carefully designed. Couldn't ask for a better debut of a fully 3D Kirby game.

  • Just a good chill time.

  • I don't get a lot of opportunities to play games with my brother but Shredder’s Revenge was one of those rare titles. I had a really fun time beating up the Foot Clan with my bro.

  • This was the first game I finished in 2022 and it stuck with me all year. While the action gameplay is pretty standard stuff, the story, presentation, and character work were amazingly well done. I've been kind of burned out on Marvel stuff lately but Guardians really drew me in.
