Hi.
Here's a list of games, sorted by release date, that I liked in 2018.
What is it? - Mech-Tactics-That's-Actually-A-Puzzle-Chess-Like
What do I like about it? - Feeling like a genius after staring at a turn for 30+ minutes, then enacting a plan that puts you into an advantageous position for the next turn. Also feeling like a moron when you thought your plan was good, then realizing you missed a detail that will result in losing a unit or taking heavy damage to your power grid.
What is it? - Melodramatic Action Brawler JRPG, Part 7 of 7
What do I like about it? - It's a solid Yakuza game in a brand spanking new engine.
But? - The ending isn't great.
What is it? - Non-Licensed Arcade-Like Baseball Game
What do I like about it? - I should first note that I'm not a sports fan, let alone a baseball fan. I blame Yakuza 6's baseball management mini game for sparking interest in this game. Thankfully, this is more "video game" baseball than "simulation" baseball. Quite simply, it's fun to play.
What is it? - Supernatural Investigator Adventure Game
What do I like about it? - The story and characters are interesting. Potential replayability by choosing a different backstory and taking different characters out on each mission.
What is it? - Melodramatic Action Brawler JRPG, Part 2 of 7
What do I like about it? - The continuing melodramatic story of Kazuma Kiryu and beating up jerks. Callbacks to Yakuza 0 are a nice addition.
What is it? - It's Dragon Quest, dood.
What do I like about it? - It's a traditional yet modern feeling JRPG. At it's base, it's a nice, chill experience across 100+ hours.
What is it? - Anime World War II Era-Like Tactics Game
What do I like about it? - It's a solid sequel to the original Valkyria Chronicles. The Grenadier class is a nice addition, providing new options and challenges in battles.
What is it? - SWERY
What do I like about it? - It's a very personal story of pain that ends with hope and an affirmation of life.
What is it? - Deferring to Alex Navarro, Cool Tetris
What do I like about it? - Journey mode is Tetris as an experience. One that feels strangely life affirming. It's an all around good Tetris game.
What is it? - Celebration of Persona 3's Characters and Music
What do I like about it? - The music and characters of Persona 3. Special mention to "Our Moment," the opening song, for being an emotional jab to those that finished Persona 3/FES/Portable.
What is it? - Celebration of Persona 4's Characters and Music
What do I like about it? - The music and characters of Persona 4.
What is it? - Celebration of Persona 5's Characters and Music
What do I like about it? - The music and characters of Persona 5. I really like the Persona franchise.
