Games That Have Been Released on the Most Platforms

The other day, in the GB Discord, someone noticed that Oddworld New 'n' Tasty has come out on quite a few consoles, with a whopping ten platforms to its name (actually twelve, but at the time the page was missing the game's mobile ports.) This began a short discussion between myself, disruptivenoise, and niflhe wondering what game holds the highest number of release platforms.

After a "quick" stroll through the most noteworthy franchises in gaming, the highest selling games of all time, obscure platform libraries, and any other possible contenders which came to mind, we had assembled a seemingly accurate list of just under 100 games which had at least 13 releases (chosen semi-arbitrarily, as it seemed like a good cut-off point looking at the titles we had assembled at that point.)

Below is that list, in order from least to most releases, alongside a statistic of platforms-per-year-since-release and any thoughts about the game and it's ports which come to mind.

Note: this number is going specifically by GB wiki specifications, including what the wiki considers a platform and separating games where the wiki considers them two different titles. That said, if this list happens to be missing anything, feel free to bring it up.

Going just by what is in the GB wiki seems dubious. Tetris alone is on over 65 platforms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tetris_variants

@movethebongos: It certainly isn't perfect, but the GB wiki was mainly chosen for how readily it presents information at a glance (and because the conversation began with a GB wiki entry.) I still think it's the right choice, however, since the GB wiki tends to be a bit more granular than Wikipedia, for better or for worse.

That said, going by that list way oversells it. That lists every variant of Tetris ever made, including games like Welltris, Hatris, Tetris Battle Gaiden, Tetris Effect, and Puyo Puyo Tetris. While those are all similar to Tetris, they're firmly their own games, and thus would be separate entries in this list if any of them had enough platform releases to qualify.

Very cool stuff, thank you for this. Mostly what I would expect, but some neat exceptions, surprised to not see Skyrim on this list. I half expected to see a Tony Hawk game on this list, but I suspect that's just due to the sheer number of games that came out in a short time frame (same for Guitar Hero and Mega Man). Also, who knew James Pond 2 had so many ports? I guess that popularity doesn't always have a direct correlation on the number of ports!

This must of taken a huge amount of time to put together, thanks for the effort. Super interesting.

I'm a bit late to the party, but Lemmings (the 1991 release version) shows 23 platforms on the GB wiki, and 29 on Wikipedia. My guess is your search may have accidentally stopped at the 2006 re-release with a different 5 platforms and ignored the original release? Even counting them separately, the original on 23 platforms should be in your list, right?
