If this is the stuff you enjoyed the most about La-Mulana 2, I have wonderful news about the first one: it's way better than 2 in those aspects, imo. The tradeoff is that the platforming is significantly... stiffer? More deliberate?

Anyway, I went through these 2 games in the last 12 months and they are both solidly in my top 10 all time. I love their obscure brand of bullshit and their tongue-in-cheek approach to making stuff comically difficult.

I moved to adept 3 and immediately went on a 10-game run where I got two bad second places and EIGHT (!!!!) last places. And I'm a pretty defensive player overall. It was a constant barrage of huge tsumos on my dealership, hanemans out of my low-risk discards, it was an absolute nightmare. Levelled out a bit recently, but I've been struggling with motivation to play regularly.

My first Yakuman finally happened! What a way to break the curse.

Yeah, I unwind in 3-player mainly because I really don't care about my rank there and the possibility of just doing some wild shit is bigger. So when I get bodied my reaction is less "dang, I got bodied" and more "I deserve to get bodied for trying some ridiculous shit that was never going to work anyway".

I happen to have some spare Jade lying around that should be enough for one tourney, so I'd be glad to host the first one if we can figure out times. Probably on a weekend? Like 4PM ET?

I will end up playing way too much mahjong because of this new mode. Gotta get those little fish

Y'all ever play that 3-player mahjong? It's WILD. One han per North Wind you draw? WILD. Characters suit completely removed (except for 1s and 9s)? WILD. It's freestyle, fast and loose mahjong. Just go ham with your most absurd tries for high-scoring hands. I love it.

I am currently sitting at a 4-win streak on Silver Room, a 7-match streak on top 2, and now I'm just waiting for my luck to turn. (hopefully it will at least wait until I move up to Adept-2)

Today I got second place in a match purely by playing smart defense (didn't win a single hand) and somehow that felt better than some high-scoring wins. The hands weren't there and not only I knew enough about the game to know they weren't there, but also to decide what to do not to get blown up by someone else. Novice-me would have tried to keep pushing doomed hands all the way and would have gotten completely obliterated.
