I have finally made it to Adept and I'm now terrified of playing because there are consequences for losing. Also, sure enough, I dominated my first Silver Room match until the very end, only to be overtaken by the very first Yakuman I've ever seen in this game. At least I didn't draw into it, so still got second.
hahahah extremely same, I declared a couple yesterday that legit had me reflecting on them hours later like "you're bad at game, how do you declare riichi on a 2-tile wait when literally anything would have improved your wait"
edit: you know what's really bullshit? Running into a haneman on this West discard
I was one win away from Adept, then hit a rough 4-game patch where I moved back 100 points or so. Climbing steadily again, but I'm trying not to play more than 2 or 3 games a day. My brain is fried after that.
I'd also be up for semi-regular tournaments or friendlies. Weekends definitely better! Any reasonable time (ET) will do.
Yesterday my table got blown up by a 9-dora (!!!!) sanbaiman - at least it was tsumo, so it didn't end the game instantly. (I still got second!). Also, I ended a game prematurely for the first time. This was East 2 after two haneman in a row against the same poor person:
Hey y'all, with the new Mahjong Mornings/This is the Ron series and the general increase in popularity this game has been seeing, I thought it would be a good idea to have a topic to share stories, knowledge, resources and maybe for people to organize some friendly games?
I am still very much a learner (started playing a few weeks ago) and still don't have all yakus memorized perfectly, but I have been playing a couple of games at Mahjong Soul every evening and finding myself more and more often on the winning side! Yesterday I had a beautiful 8-han (riichi, ippatsu + tsumo, 3 doras, pinfu) that took me from last place to first and allowed me to play defensive in the other hands until the end for a victory. It was probably my highest high up to now!
I think my main advice would be not to worry too much about playing optimally. Just do what feels right! It's not a super difficult game and if you've played P4 you know what's going on with the combat. Relax and enjoy it!
