I lost my father when I was young, and while I can't say so for sure, I bet your father will continue to inspire you years after his passing, just like mine has. I hope you and your family will be alright in time. Love you man :(

I have two recommendations.

  1. Limbo... 2d space, requires a little bit of reflexes, but not too much, and it's simple. New gamers should always start with simple.
  2. Why not something turn-based? Something like XCOM, CIV5 or Persona? Take reflexes and spacial navigation completely out of the equation.

I would highly recommend Limbo as well if you haven't tried it already. My sister, who hasn't played games since original Sonic the Hedgehog, completed it with some difficulty at times but loved the atmosphere and art style. Same with Brade. I would also recommend the Mass Effect series on low difficulty. Tell her she can ask you for pointers but don't push her forward. The story centric nature of it can help overcome some of the frustration she gets from not controlling well, and you also have squad mates to help you out. Either that, or you can do the gameplay and she can make the story choices

The original Mercenaries with the bounties to catch the deck of card terrorists was probably one of the best open world side activities I ever enjoyed. That game was so goddam good. I seriously doubt it holds up though.

As far as far cry 3 being the best open world game ever...you guys are on crack. I found it got repetitive super fast.

It's more about the freedom of combat choices. Every choice is valid and the game encouraged experimentation. The enemies don't get much more difficult but you get more powerful.

@genfuyung: If I may speculate wildly, I've always assumed Drew for the churchgoing type who isn't like crazy fundamentalist about it or pushy, but took it to heart enough that he's very polite, and doesn't curse or generally make crude jokes, and tries to generally be a positive, conscientious person.

Or maybe he's not particularly religious, but his parents were and the overall attitude kinda carried over?

Or religion has nothing to do with it and he's just super polite and considerate. Still, it lines up with the sort of attitudes I associate with like, my grandpa who was a nice religious dude from a small rural town. Except Drew is from this generation, so he is also more open to people of all walks of life, whereas my grandpa was very mildly racist I later learned (not like "use the n-word" racist, but he was from a small town of white people, and apparently occasionally used some terms that by the 90s were no longer PC and were borderline offensive).

Sorry if I'm way off base, Drew!

...now that you mention it, Drew is always talking about "the Jew problem." I never thought much of it until now.

Ok, that got a chuckle from me. Well played. On topic, Drew is definitely a weird combination of mild mannered honest niceness and humor. Normally people don't combine those two, so it's pretty refreshing. Not that I have anything against being occasionally crude, it's just interesting to see personality types you don't come across very often in real life.

@theblue: I actually experienced that as well... Is that a common bug?

I bought the controller and the game on Steam sale, going (relatively) well so far. Up against the skeletons in the graveyard, decided on running a bandit. Killed one big skeleton, which I'm relatively proud of. Still can't consistently survive, but hey. Didn't die before the skeletons so I consider that a victory. I have to say that although I really like the combat I'm not very good at it yet. Enjoying so far!

Yeah, I've just been putting it off because of the cost. Not a huge investment, but my mind goes to all the awesome games you don't need a controller for and makes me think twice. This might just be the push I need to finally get one :|

I've been considering getting into Dark Souls, but I have a couple questions. Should I play the first one? Also, should I get a controller? (I'm using my PC)

Gameplay-wise I'll read some basic non-spoiler guides and just have at it I guess.

I had a lot of fun with Endless Space, even though I sucked at it. Have to agree about the UI, it was clean and clear of clutter or menus on menus.
