Also, Mid-West U.S. here and I've never heard anyone pronounce consortium as "consorshum".

I still use the old school :) and :*( emoji's on a daily basis. The new emjoi's are to fancy for my taste :D

I thought I was a pretty "online" guy, but this episode was pretty eye opening. This was a great episode!

This was great! I was initially gonna skip over this but episode 1 got me hooked and this was even better.

I work in the IT industry, know stuff about RFIC's etc through osmosis (different thing for standards for email, etc perhaps), but I was enlightened by what Lucy had to say about the process and the device compatibility aspects.

I am not used to saying "i learned a lot" from a giant bomb show.

Loved the discussion. I can tell you're trying things out, but as someone who is primarily consuming this as audio the brief blips of modem static on the transitions did get a bit grating in my headphones at their frequency at times.

I’ve said it before but I was not expecting to like this show, but both episodes have been surprisingly good and legitimately informative. I haven’t watched all the new shows, so I can’t rank them all, but I can definitely say this show is my favorite so far, and Albummer is definitely the worst of the bunch.

One of the things that's not explicitly said in the video, is that when you send an emoji, you're sending just a character (2~4 bytes) which is then rendered locally using a font. This is why it got its life in mobile (because sms is limited and expensive). Conversely, Twitch/GB/etc emotes are sending a whole image link where the browser/app has to download the emote via internet. So adding new characters to emoji isn't as simple as adding new emote to GB chat: Imagine if every time they added new chat emote to GB, every user had to download and install new font to their OS before they can see it in chat. It's a logistics nightmare.

And as an amateur internet user, please give memes (or maybe gifs?) the same broader societal-impact treatment as emojis. I know the first episode was meme-based, but I can’t keep up, they make me feel so old and stupid (…I’m 30 😳)

As an Iowan I had only ever heard or thought consorshum. How many English words don't turn "ti" into a "sh" sound? Consorteeum seems insane, I don't think I'd heard anyone say it like that until pretty recently. And the way Tamoor swallowed the "t" was alarming.

I had an idea for something to look into, if only because I reminded myself of the song this morning.

I knew 'Carameldannsen' was a huge anime/weeb culture thing, with the gifs of dancing anime girls and the sped up version of the song (which is a fucking dope track and I will not hear otherwise). However, I learned today that there's a bit of a ironic/dread/pandemic retread of the song playing while people sit around sad or pretend to be dead?

And honestly, any attempt to get Bakalar to do the dance sells the episode 100%.

Maybe I'm too old to understand what these hip youngsters are on about but I keep watching anyway because it's amusing to see them talk about the funny things that make no sense.

I'll second this. I'm liking the show, but there were a couple of fast transitions early in the first episode--each with its own sound cue--and it was too much. Admittedly I didn't notice it so much in this episode.

This show is some of my favorite content on the internet right now. I loved episode 2 and can't wait for the next one.
