    Overview

A spectating villain is a villain that sits by and watches as the player character or characters fight against his or her minions, typically from a prominent seat such as a throne. Once the player has disposed of the other enemies, only then will the villain deign to join the battle. This particular villainous trait is commonly seen in beat'em ups and fighting games of the 1990s. Examples include Mortal Kombat, in which Shang Tsung spectates from his throne in one of the game's arenas, and Mr. X in Streets of Rage, who watches the player fight his cronies from a plush leather chair before entering the fray.
