Overview
Super Forms have been in the Sonic the Hedgehog games since Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Typically a character who has transformed into their Super Form has all of their natural abilities enhanced, including strength, speed and agility, while also gaining near-invincibility. The character also changes colour from their original form, and will often glow or flash while in the Super Form. The first transformation seen in the series is Sonic's "Super Sonic" form.
Super Forms (particularly Super Sonic) are often noted for their similarity in appearance to the Super Saiyans of Dragon Ball Z.
Super Sonic
Super Sonic was the first Super Form seen in the franchise, appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Typically in the 2D games, after the player has collected all seven Chaos Emeralds and 50 rings they can transform into Super Sonic by pressing the jump button in mid-air. Super Sonic was just a power-up in Sonic 2, but now often plays a big role in the plot of Sonic games, usually fighting the final boss.
Appearance
Sonic changes from blue to a golden-yellow colour and his quills stand upright. In the Sonic Adventure games, when transformed his quills matched Shadow's, however in more recent games all of the quills on his head turn upright. In more recent designs Super Sonic also has a flame-like aura. Originally his eyes changed from black to green, they now change from green to red. His eyes are also generally more angled, like Shadow's.
Abilities
Super Sonic is virtually invincible, can fly, and is even faster and stronger the he is in his normal form. Since Sonic Adventure 2 he has learned how to use Chaos Control, and is thought to be able to use other Chaos Powers, which Shadow has more of a fondness for than Sonic.
Transformation Conditions
All 7 Chaos Emeralds, rings to sustain the transformation (varies between games).
Trivia
In Sonic Shuffle, Super Sonic is his own character, separate from Sonic. In fact, one player can play as Sonic while another simultaneously plays as Super Sonic!
Super Shadow
Super Shadow is identical to Super Sonic in terms of abilities and transformation conditions, needing the seven Chaos Emeralds to transform and generally needing rings to sustain the form.
Appearance
Shadow's main colour changes from black to a lemon-cream colour, however his red highlights and white chest-fur remain the same. His eyes don't change colour as they were already red, he also gains a flame-like aura like Sonic.
Transformation Conditions
All 7 Chaos Emeralds, rings to sustain the transformation (varies between games).
"Hyper Shadow" trivia
Super Shadow is often mistakenly called Hyper Shadow because he appeared a more silver colour in Sonic Adventure 2, however this was because of the way the graphics engine rendered Super Shadow in the game.
Super Silver
Silver's Super Form has currently only made one appearance, in 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog.
Abilities
Super Silver gains enhancements to his telekinetic powers, he can fly without having to use his ESP and can also create a large shield of telekinetic energy called the "Shield of Light", Silver can also use Chaos Control. It is presumed that Silver also gains the same physical enhancements as Sonic and Shadow.
Appearance
Silver's white/silver main colour changes to a light golden-yellow. His mane becomes a darker yellow and his eyes change from yellow to red, like Sonic and Shadow. Also the glowing lines on his boots, gloves and cuffs change from teal to yellow. The Black outlines around his eyes stay the same.
Transformation Conditions
All 7 Chaos Emeralds, rings to sustain the transformation.
Burning Blaze
In the Sonic Rush series, Blaze the Cat can use the Sol Emeralds to transform in much the same way that Sonic can use the Chaos Emeralds. Since the retcon in Sonic the Hedgehog, it is unclear if this form still exists, as Blaze is now from the future, where Chaos Emeralds exist rather than Sol Emeralds, and Blaze has not yet been seen transforming since the Sonic Rush games. Blaze is the only girl so far with a Super Form.
Abilities
Burning Blaze gains flight and near-invulnerability, as well as enhancements to her pyrokinesis, she can now throw fireballs which she can also charge to make more powerful. She has a dashing ability, but it's used for dodging rather than attacking.
Appearance
Blaze's fur changes from purple to pink, with the tip of her tail turning red and the details on her ponytail disappear. Her clothes also change, her jacket's main colour changes from purple to red, with the trim changing from red to gold/yellow. The cuffs of her shoes and gloves are engulfed in magenta-coloured flames.
Transformation Conditions
All 7 Sol Emeralds, rings to sustain the transformation.
Super/Hyper Knuckles
Super Knuckles only appeared in Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The form hasn't been seen since and due to Knuckles gaining a Super Shield from Sonic instead of transforming himself in Sonic Heroes, many believe that Knuckles' Super Form has been retconned. However, it was referred to in the game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
Hyper Knuckles only appears in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Abilities
Super Knuckles gains enhancements to his strength, speed, jumping, gliding, climbing and so on, however he does not fly like Super Sonic. On top of these abilities, Hyper Knuckles gains a tremor attack that destroys all enemies on-screen and the ability to breathe underwater.
Appearance
In his Super Form Knuckles glows pink, but otherwise stays unchanged. Hyper Knuckles leaves afterimages as he moves, but otherwise looks the same as Super Knuckles.
Transformation Conditions
Super Knuckles - All 7 Chaos Emeralds, rings to sustain the transformation.
Hyper Knuckles - All 7 Super Emeralds or the Master Emerald, rings to sustain the transformation.
