A StarCraft II Bug Or Two You Might Want To Know About

Because we care.

The StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty downloader and I don't get along. Because I can't connect to the direct download server, I'm stuck in a peer-to-peer logjam. In an estimated 13 hours or so, I'll be able to experience Blizzard's RTS, which from all the accounts I've read thus far, is a stellar offering. Yet, it's one that isn't without its small share issues. This downloader springs to my mind, but Blizzard has identified more pressing faults on the game's official website.

Perhaps the most important one you should know about at this point is a dandy that can send your computer into a nuclear meltdown. "Certain screens make your hardware work pretty hard," the known issues portion of the site reads, "screens that are light on detail [like a menu screen] may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient." It's a result of the game "drawing the screen quickly." The workaround is to cap the game's frame rate by digging and adjusting file values.

I don't know who this guy is, but I like his beard. I bet we're going to be the bestest of best friends whenever I start playing.
I don't know who this guy is, but I like his beard. I bet we're going to be the bestest of best friends whenever I start playing.

Windows owners of the game are also reporting crashes when running the game in compatibility mode. But Mac owners are feeling the pain, too. In a message board thread, it's pointed out that there are crashes associated with NVIDIA drivers for owners with OSX 10.6 and that plugging in a USB headset makes the frame rate take a dive--another handy fix, I'd say, for anyone with menu screen meltdown issues.

Have you spotted any issues? I would chime in, but I've got a few more hours of downloading before I get a chance to whiff Jim Raynor's space cigarette smoke or put the hurt on some Zerg.

No issues whatsoever for me except that I suck. Even after all that practice I had during beta I still landed in the Bronze League.

This quip would be HILARIOUS if there wasn't a system in place to allow people to try the game for 7 hours of game time before buying it. Almost like a demo.

No game can make your computer melt-down.  When you make a system, you should make sure your computer can handle a full GPU and CPU load in regards to heat generation.

Anyway, haven't run into any problems.  Page pool is a bit annoying, but once I made it 4 gigs, i stopped having that popup.

The game runs like a rock with a frame rate that (almost) never falters. Even more amazing is that I'm pulling this off with a GPU that's nearly 4 years old. I'm quiet proud of this 8800GTX - doing beautifully despite some truly chaotic battles.  This game is one awesome piece of code.

The reason  it appears that so many people are having more issues than any other PC game release is because so many people bought the game... I'm not saying these issues don't exist but when you have this many people buying and playing a game (in this case attempting to play), there are bound to be dozens if not more bugs found that were not found previously... Blizzard is a stand up company though and will obviously patch ASAP. Chill.

Yeah, I'm in a similar spot, with my X850.   Nice to see old cards learning new tricks.

I just got done playing SC 2 only because it crashed me out when I tried to do the next mission. On two occasions my friend was unable to scroll the screen down with the mouse. Also online games have been dropping a lot for me. I don't know if these are pretty common but they are not keeping me away from this great game.

That's not "code". That's having art assets dumbed down so most people can play.

You come on to GB moaning about a game having problems yet you've purchased it? And you claim that consoles are superior, yet you've purchased it. So therefore you must have a fairly adequate PC... You're a strange man.

Lowering the screen resolution is the quick fix here. That's normally why things overheat, people set the resolution for their computer screen size and their cooling unit can't quite handle it.

Its literally only an issue because PC gamers have graphics options and console gamers don't. SC2 could arbitrarily cap its graphic capabilities and avoid this but then high end PC users wouldn't get to play a game that looks several times better than anything possible on console.

You're telling me you've never had a console hard lock on you? Bad Company 2 on the PS3 has done that to me at least three times now. Hell, Puzzle Quest 2 just did it a few days ago on the Xbox. I've run into quite a few problems in my life with console games.

Sure I would agree that it happens more often on a PC, but think about the crap ton of mothernoards, soundcards, graphics cards etc that a company has to test for on the PC compared to a closed system that is the console. Not disagreeing with you, but as consoles become more and more complex, I'm thinking you are going to start seeing a lot more games coming out on a console that will have to be patched for some issue.

This game runs like butter. Who the hell has their frame rate uncapped anyway when most are playing on a 60hz maximum display? Turn on triple buffer v-sync for fuck's sake. It's 2010.

Or does that not help? Brad2 did a terrible job explaining things.

And some people actually like to tinker and tweak their toys. Different strokes for different folks.

But with such a casual-friendly developer like Blizzard, you think they would've stomped out these potentially harmful annoyances before releasing the game. It's not just the hardest core of PC nerds who play this stuff, and some folks would like the game to work on day-one.

I have the black screen issue.  It happens in the middle of play.  Not super happy about that, also if I ctrl-alt-del it brings up the log-in menu in win 7 and I can start a task manager.  If I leave the task manager open after that I can alt-tab over to it when it does the black screen again.  Has nothing to do with heating or the entire screen would stay that color.  That is all programming.

Honestly, I don't mind Brad2 not knowing who that is (Seriously, yes, I know it's Mensk, but how would people who don't care about it know?  He doesn't even look that much like he did in SC1) or all this talk about the program crashing (I also like Console games because they are easier to run, but prefer PC games for the  variety and upgradablility.)

That said, the idea that a GAME can destroy a system is freaking ridiculous.  No game can make your system go over the maximum threshold.  Instead of indulging in dumb rumors like this, you should teach PC users to stress test their hardware with temperature monitoring, to make sure it can handle a full CPU and GPU load.   That stuff is all set by the CPU and Mobo makers, not Blizzard.

Oh pleeeeease.. ugh

I develop games all day as part of my job, consoles have a shitton of bugs just like the PC, the difference being Steam or whatever service you use patches games silently in the background while you do something else, or you could just not patch it and wait for a later period, while on ps3 you are locked into patching a game to play it regardless.

The other day i ran  Uncharted 2 for the first time in months and it  took 5mins to patch and <<<<TWENTY MINUTES>>>> to get into the multiplayer lobby after having pressed the multiplayer button, i am not fucking exaggerating.
Why? no idea, maybe the POS hard drive in my 60GB ps3 is about to seize up, maybe I should stick to effortless PC gaming, donno.

FWIW, no problems on my end. Bought the standard version at midnight on launch day, installed it and patched it that night, and it's been working fine since. Intel Q6600, Windows 7 Pro x64, 2GB RAM, 640MB 8800GTS, all settings on high.

Only problem is that I created my SC2 profile without knowing that the name I chose was permanent for both online and offline play. They've got a handy notice now, but it's too late for me. My profile name is the oh-so-creative "Kyle".

After installing and then trying to open the game, it told me there was a patch to be downloaded.  I tried clicking, "yes", to download the patch and I also tried, "cancel".  It would sputter and then the question would just come up again.  Simply restarting my computer fixed the problem.

I hate windows automatic compatibility mode settings that it applies, today I had to go into some system files to disable it so it would stop fucking with Steam. Starcraft 2's getting problems too because of windows compatibility mode? Fuck windows compatibility mode. Turn it off before you even try playing modern games on your windows pc just to avoid any problems.

Yea, my computer completely shut off yesterday in the middle of the campaign. I felt the back of my computer and it just about burned my hand. My computer is more than capable, and I can run Crysis at lower temps than SC2.  Wtf? I really don't like a game to damage my hardware Blizzard :(

I wouldn't call "making your computer work pretty hard" a fault.

What I can see happening is people who don't normally PC game, or who just play WoW, are just now installing a modern title that actually works the video card and CPU. WoW is a memory hog which doesn't generate a lot of heat.

So the PC on the carpet shoved inside a cubby between the desk and the wall with more dust inside than PC components is probably freaking out in ways it didn't before.

It IS code. The game dev has a target hardware platform that they have to hit to attain the right level of market penetration. The better the engine, the better the retention of art assets through lower hardware targets. I'm not saying that this is the greatest piece of code ever, but it DOES do a remarkable job of throwing a lot of art on screen while keeping the frame rate in check. Any game engine is a balancing act and I feel that this one does a much better job than most of getting the most out of the hardware it has to work with.

This. The only recent games where people have complained about their computer overheating is this game and Alien Swarm. Both are games people who normally don't play PC games would get. I'm pretty sure that if the same people tried to play any other modern PC game their computer would overheat.

An uncapped framerate is not any reason to "fry" your video card.

If your video card is getting fried simply because it's running at 100%, contact your computer or video card manufacturer. They either cut costs by putting a heatsink on your video card that isn't sufficient enough or they didn't even bother to stress test your machine.

Also, if any of you are interested in your video card temps at load, I recommend downloading an advanced version of your driver suite (for ATI), or getting Furmark or Rivatuner.

Blizzard putting an uncapped framerate in their games doesn't cause hardware failure. Your manufacturer cutting costs is not Blizzard's fault, or you being irresponsible enough as to not forcing v-sync when you're aware of such an issue makes it your fault. If you're going to make an investment in a gaming PC, learn a few things about it, just like any other purchase you make.

I have a problem with it forcing me to use a standard resolution instead of the one that actually works for my monitor. I have to use the closest one, which zooms in way too much and makes it so I can't see things like menu names or the amount of resources I have. Can't find a log file or registry entry log to change and fix the problem either.
