A Universe of Mega Mans

Capcom crosses up its little blue guy with its fireball throwing guy and its heart-imprinted underwear guy.

No Caption Provided
"This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be."

That's how Capcom's Keiji Inafune describes Mega Man Universe, which the company formally announced this morning. The rest of the release makes the game sound like a mix of new and old, almost like an updated take on the classic 2D Mega Man games. Capcom's also throwing around claims like "Capcom aims to deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet."

Information provided to GameSpot by the game's publisher says that the game will feature a lot of crossovers with other Capcom products, allowing Mega Man to turn into Ryu and Arthur, among others.

Creativity seems like just the thing that the Mega Man franchise needs right now. After all, the biggest thing the series has going right now are a couple of downloadable, deliberately retro games. You can't coast on pure nostalgia forever, right? It sounds like we'll be hearing a bit more about Mega Man Universe from San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place next week. After having a horrible time with Mega Man 9--one that led to me completely skipping Mega Man 10--it'll be interesting to see how this ends up when it's eventually released as a downloadable game for Xbox 360 and PS3.

It looks as though Mega Man will change into different Capcom characters rather than simply changing colors.  Kinda weak if this turns out to be true.

Creative? Mix of old and new? Sounds like they're going for something Super Mario Galaxy-like.

Which is awesome, by the way.

Mega Man 10 has easier modes that are more in line with the difficulty of the timeless Mega Man 2. If you're a masochist that deserves punishment for being a naughty boy, there's harder modes that are more in line with MM9.

I liked Mega Man 10 alot. Mega Man 9 can smile and blow me. (Although, secretly, I still like Mega Man 9... just not in a "this game is fun to play" way.)

More Mega Man is always good. I'd be fine with them making 2d throwbacks into infinity, but if they can actually make Mega Man work in 3d that would be great too.

There's no way this will be better than Megaman Soccer.

But honestly, the title made me think Monster Hunter/ Phantasy Star, since Capcom is making fucking everything into Monster Hunter now.

Jeff, give MM9 another try; it's not that hard after a while. Also, I've heard MM10 is easier.

" the game will feature a lot of crossovers with other Capcom products, allowing Mega Man to turn into Ryu and Arthur, among others"

This reminds me of a series of megaman crossover games i played on Newgrounds once where each game was a level that felt and played likje a typical megaman level but was inspired by other games like Metroid and Ghosts & Goblins (bosses being the heroes from those games). Cool thing about those flash games was that when you beat one of them you brought all the power-ups with you into the next one.

@GI_Josh:  I agree wholeheartedly.

I see this as a downloadable tool set with a preset story mode sorta set, but the rest will be the ability to make your own mega man levels.

Whatever the case, so long as there's SOME preboxed game (ideally with a story, even if of mega man proportions), I will consume the hell outta this.

Mega Man just doesn't have a fan base anymore...  And I don't think he will be finding one anytime soon.  Gamers are just to into war games and stuff that aren't like Mega Man.  Its just a sad truth.  RIP Mega Man...  It wasn't a bad run, it just wasn't as good as Super Mario's.

No, I don't and for several reasons. Capcom's backlog is popular enough to stand on its alone without having the Mega Man in the title, A lot of Capcom's backlog has already been re released or re imagined for downloadable services like PSN and XBLA, where's the "creativity" in re releasing a bunch of old games? I'm almost certain this will be it's own original title.

Your loss for sucking at games. You should know from your experience of games that those awesome games require you to learn the level a good bit before you eventually learn to breeze through the game, but unfortunately gamers and even game journalists prefer games that hold your hand and give you a checkpoint every 2 seconds. You may aswell just review movies

Hopefully, that means they'll make this game something that couldn't have been released on the NES.  Mega Man 8 is still my favorite of the main series (X still tops it though) and it makes me sad that the most technically advanced straight up Mega Man game is something that was released on the Saturn.

Little Big Mega Man, or Mega Man 2.0 is what this sounds like to me. User created Mega Men [new term?] , as the video shows arms legs heads hand pop off to customize your own Mega Man. User created Enemies/Custom bosses would allow pvp to take other users created abilities. Or perhaps it is just a Smash Brother's mash-up game with combination on Capcom characters rather then user generated.

I think it would be way awesome if they would go a 2D Devil May Cry/Viewtiful Joe route and rack up crazy combos. They could do that and hold true to the Mega Man formula still. 2D art, though. No 3D please.

Man, does Jeff ever whinge in this article.  Megaman 9 and 10 were great and had some very creative level design.  It wasn't hurting for originality or coasting on nostalgia.  They were the first relevant Megaman games in over a decade!  He's just angry he had a hard time with the game.  I'll tell you what, it's easier to play than Super Street Fighter IV (which he gave five stars).

Anyway. I am hyped for this game.  I'm not letting the trailer influence what I imagine the gameplay will be like, but sticking with classic Megaman (the one true Mega), I'm fairly positive that I'll love it.
