April Sales Released, With Mortal Kombat Koming Out on Ktop

And Portal 2 wasn't far behind.

Is that word? Did it have to be done? No.

But what it represents is true: Mortal Kombat dominated the charts in April, selling 900,000 copies across both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, according to the latest data released by the NPD Group. Portal 2, which also had a PC and Mac release, came up a close second, but sales data wasn't released. Less than 900K, obviously!

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals did not chart in the top ten in April, but that's because NPD did not combine the sales of the regular $59.99 game and the more expensive PlayStation Move bundle. Had the two numbers been combined, NPD noted, SOCOM 4 would have broken into the top ten list.

Here are the top ten games for the month:

  2. Portal 2
  3. Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  5. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters
  6. Crysis 2
  7. Just Dance 2
  8. Michael Jackson: The Experience
  9. Pokemon White
  10. NBA 2K11

In terms of hardware, Microsoft came out on top, pushing 297,000 units. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP all say year-over-year sales improvements from April 2010, while Nintendo's Wii did not. An upcoming price drive to $150, however, should spur Wii into more hands, as Nintendo prepares to transition hardware.

What surprised me is that the 360 version of Portal 2 sold 60% more than the PS3 version and also the 360 version Michael Jackson was in the top ten and not the Wii version.

Does NPD track steam sales? I thought STEAM didn't release sales data, so it's impossible for this char to be completely true.

kratos being extra character for ps3 really didnt do much for PS3 version sales...
It's either really crappy online and Kratos.
Or? No Kratos and Great Online!
Thats what i went for, great online...
But now its No online to Online LOL

@chiefmegadeth: Actually,  "PS3 version's lowest sales rank, was the Xbox 360's highest sales rank during the 11 days it was available in April." even during the current psn outage. Its what I got from some website which is interesting. I guess kratos did help, but for people without sticks, it seems to be because of the preferred d-pad.

Doesn't really matter though because psn is still freakin down! Still have yet to play portal 2 because I can't link it to my steam account

Really happy for MK. Nice to see that all that effort on such a great game made with such kare and kontent being paid off. Also I think MK makes Marvel vs. Capcom (which was supposedly a big launch too) look like a bloody baby.

I'm impressed to see this result, although if it doesn't include Steam sales then I suspect numbers will be different. Both very good games, already have MK and will be picking up Portal 2 once my Uni exams are done.

I've had this view for years.  Who gives a flying fuck what makes the top 10?  As long as the games I like make a profit for the developers/publishers and get us more games, that's enough for me.  It's not a race.

That being said, I am surprised that Pokemon White outsold Black.  If I'd have known that, I'd have gotten Black instead to be in a better position with trades.
