EA's Origin Service Is Basically Spyware, According to Origin's EULA

Agreeing to Origin's TOS effectively gives EA permission to track all manner of bizarre information about your computing habits, and sell them to third parties.

Because today's trifecta of corporate malfeasance and/or generally shitty behavior wouldn't be complete without mentioning something awful EA is doing, let's talk about Origin again. Specifically, how it apparently includes spyware.

You guys? We REALLY need to start reading these EULAs ahead of time.
You guys? We REALLY need to start reading these EULAs ahead of time.

Once again reminding us all that we really ought to be reading these terms of service that we so often blindly agree to, intrepid users of Origin have discovered within EA's End User License Agreement for the service that, by installing the software on the system and using it, you are giving EA full license to track a number of different things on your computer, including, but not limited to personal information, computer information, application usage, software, software usage, and peripheral hardware usage. The reason for all of this is for the usual "marketing purposes" and "to improve our products and services" nonsense, but the EULA also states that EA will happily sell your information to any third parties it sees fit.

It's fair to point out that Valve's Steam service also does some of the things listed here when you use it. However, the trick is that Steam allows users to opt out of any and all such practices. Origin has no such opt-out feature, and in fact states that you cannot use the service at all unless you agree to their terms.

That does present quite the quandary for the information protective gamers out there who might want to play a game like, say, Battlefield 3 on their PC. Battlefield 3, alongside other EA PC titles, will require an install of Origin to operate, even if you buy a physical copy of the game.

In the end, this is actually a fairly fixable problem for EA. The publisher would simply need to patch in an opt-out option for any and all info scraping that Origin might be involved in. If it doesn't? Here's a deeply enraged Reddit thread that you might want to partake of.

Also, Origins is fucking useless, and their EA catalogue is fucking pathetic. Did you know that when you play Battlefield 3 it isn't even integrated with Origins, and that your Origins friend list and your Battlefield friends lists are completely separate? What fucking good is that! I know the same happens on steam but you would have thought they at least make it work with their own products.

If I wasn't so excited for Battlefield 3 I wouldn't even consider using this bullshit software.

There is only that disconnect in friends lists and such when the game is something non-Steamworks or non-Valve though. Anything Valve makes (and several other games now) does have that integration which is why Origins' lack of such integration for games that are being developed/published by EA itself makes no sense!

The only EA title I'm planning on playing on my PC anytime soon is SWTOR which I'm sure requires this to be installed (not sure if that's been confirmed or not myself though). Hopefully, they will have it resolved by then but I honestly don't think they will. I was already on the fence with that game so will probably tip me to just cancel my pre-order and skip it entirely. I've played about 10 too many MMOs (only to quit them a month later) as it is.

EA prove yet again who they care about: themselves. They complain that Steam imposes restrictions on them, and then they force their customers to use their own shitty game platform, try their best to coerce their customers with shit like this, and restrict them with DRM. EA aren't interested in giving you any service, they want YOU to service THEM.

Well EA, I can easily do without you and your games. Maybe it's a part growing older, but I feel less like any game is a "must have" for me these days. There's plenty of good games and developers out there and I'd much rather support the ones that aren't attempting to abuse me as a consumer.

Well, that's the last nail in the coffin. Not buying Battlefield 3, nor Old Republic until this shit gets resolved and they remove that "You can only download the games you payed for for a year!" crap they still have.

Many people say that Ubisoft's methods are draconian, but this takes the cake.

Hmm sign me out of Battlefield 3 then if I am gonna have to download that to play it.

Man this is bumming me out, First Diablo 3 now this. I was so pumped for Diablo 3 but I am not going to pay for that game if it is going to have that real money AH in it. At least this is something that hopefully will be fixed so I will be able to play battlefield 3.

I just read the entirety of the Steam EULA just so I know I'm not being a hypocrite in my decision to remove Origin from my computer and not buy a game that requires the service.

I'm actually surprised I didn't stumble upon anything malicious coming from the Steam side of things. Worst thing I can gather from it is that Valve has the right to suspend your account and retains the right to not have to offer any sort of refund. EA has the same thing though, and I haven't heard of Valve exercising that one besides cutting off software pirates and hackers.

Not that what EA is doing isn't scummy but if you use or have ever used Facebook, you've agreed to have far worse things done with your personal data that EA wants to do here and I guarantee you it's already been done multiple times. Almost every digital platform (including Steam though to a slightly lesser degree) has similar terms. If you hate this and use Facebook, you should drop Facebook immediately because they have more of your data and even less regard for it.
Except Facebook only has information you've actually put up on there. They dont give themselves permission to go through my whole damn harddrive like EA is doing here.

That's illegal in Australia they if they didn't remove it or remove it now that it's out(for Australians), Origin might be blocked here.

Why do they install Origin with boxed copies of games? It's mainly a digital distribution client, that's the most rediculous thing i've hears.

I was kinda psyched for SWTOR but now i'm not so sure. Unless EA comes to their senses and puts in an opt-out for this then i'm afraid i'll have to opt-out of buying it.

Because they look at Valve's Steam service and feel jealous. They would like for Origin to become a Steam competitor without pausing to realize that the reason most people love Steam is because Valve carries a metric fuckton of customer goodwill after years of great service, unlike EA.

I'll stay away from Origin myself, even though I've used Steam for quite a while. My personal end-goal is to free myself of all these DRM-clients that are required to run games.

It seems that the big-mega corporations seems intent on destroying this hobby that we all love so much. What they don't realise is that their greed will be their undoing. Like the music industry "giants" who refused to change with the Napster times, EA and their like will slowly strangle the life out of the industry and force us to find our kicks elsewhere.  Activision seem intent on annualising the fun out their games, Bobby Koitick coming out with the now famous line about wanting to eradicate the fun in game development. EA, the creators of "project 10 dollar" seem so desperate in delivering a knock-out blow to their Mortal enemy, that they would rather alienate they fan-base for the sake a buck.  "I need a dollar, dollar, dollar is what I need" seems the perfect Corporate statement for EA. Gone is their brief plucky underdog period, when we were all hoping they could compete with Activsion. In its place is the old greedy EA. And you know the saddest thing?? Can any of you honestly say you are surprised?

Something about this makes me wonder what legal recourse we'd have if a service like Steam changed their TOS to include such assholery. When I bought games through them, I certainly agreed to those terms. But if they change them to something I don't agree with, I should be in the right to demand a refund of my money, right? It's laughable to think I'd ever get a dime in compensation, and that's why these EULAs are all bullshit.

You are correct about that. However, the vast majority of people (including many who I imagine are enraged about this) voluntarily put tons of stuff on Facebook that's getting mined all the time. Like I said, I do not agree with what EA is doing AT ALL. But I'm just saying that many who are outraged about this should take a look at what other information they blindly gave greedy corporations the right to mine.

The only reason I downloaded Origin was because The Sims 3 needed it to be kept updated. I feel cheated and pretty pissed off about this, as I never agree to give that information. Not even to Valve, which I would trust a hundred times more than EA. Well thanks to this I'm selling those Sims games and not going to buy Battlefield 3, or any other EA game that is going to tie in with Origin. I would recommend other people to join in this to give EA a clear message, because voting with your wallet is the only way to make them care.

Worst nightmare scenario is that other publishers start pulling their games from Steam and setting up their own clients like EA, just imagine having to launch individual clients to play games by Ubisoft, Activision, EA, and more.
