From the Depths of Spoilerville, Modern Warfare 3 Details Leak

We knew another Call of Duty was coming, we figured it was going to be Modern Warfare 3, but Kotaku reported a trove of details about the alleged project today, an information dump about the collaboration between Infinity Ward, Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games.

Infinity Ward has since acknowledged the leak occurred, though said details are inaccurate.

"A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not," tweeted Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling. "To avoid spoiling the experience, I'd wait for the real reveal."

Kotaku's reporting on Modern Warfare 3 goes deep into spoiler territory, as the headline suggests. I'm not going to lay those details out here. If you'd like to know more about the storyline, including details about who lives and who dies, I'll point you in their direction. I'll be sticking to the broad strokes here.

Like the other Modern Warfare games, Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly take players around the world for a 15-mission campaign, picking up immediately after the cliffhanger from Modern Warfare 2. The game opens with New York City under full assault, takes players to Paris, London and other notable locales under siege in what appears to be World War III, and concludes in--well, I won't say.

Multiplayer will, naturally, play an important role in the sequel, especially expanding the popular Spec Ops mode. Spec Ops will allegedly include both "Mission" and "Survival" modes. The number of traditional multiplayer maps is pegged at around 20, but that could easily change by November.

There's not much that's a surprise here. The surprise is that so much managed to leak before E3, where it's looking like Activision was prepared to finally bring Modern Warfare 3 into the spotlight.

Laugh at me as much as you want, but my main interest in the Modern Warfare series has always been the single player plot. As ridiculously exaggerated as it may be, I've always really liked it. It's like watching an over-the-top action movie.

I'm still going to buy this game and will probably end up enjoying it quite a bit, but I feel like this leak only highlights how dryly formulaic the series is. I read though everything Kotaku posted and none of it was interesting. I don't feel spoiled and I don't feel like anything has been blown out. It's a Call of Duty game, we already know what that means. Revealing map names, or even plot points, serves little purpose.

Hopefully the PC version won't be a steaming pile of shit this time, not getting my hopes up though.

Eh, I've never been a huge fan of the WWIII-ish plot of the MW games. I'm interested to see if they change up the multiplayer, but at this point if they don't drastically change it I'll probably be skipping this one.

So long as the plot remains over the top with some notable actors I'll be fine with what they throw at us and from what's been potentially leaked, all over the world to fight in.

Which is what Battlefield 3 is also apparently doing....coincidence.

Will be playing Black Ops up until the day before MW3 is released.

I really hate the fact that I am excited about a Call of Duty game, but this sounds over-the-top enough to be completely awesome.

I'm actually pretty happy they are not chickening out with a prequel to avoid the Soap and Price fugitives storyline.

Not bad, but I learned my lesson with MW2. I'll rent MW3 and just play the campaign.

Still weird they continue to use the IW name but I guess they've broken down enough teams to refill the gaps.

Unless there are some drastic changes to the multiplayer this time around and for the love of god a new graphics engine I'm just gonna get BF3 this ear. Fall is crowded as shit and I think I can skip CoD when theres Battlefield 3 out at the same time.

I know it's cool to hate the most popular game in the world, and I'll agree that after the first few weeks, MW2's multiplayer went to shit- but god damnit, I love the stories in the first two Modern Warfare games, and I can't wait to dig in for another dose.

No, seriously. I really just don't get it.
I mean it's one thing to post an endgame spoiler about a week before a game's release. There's a risk for some people getting unwanted spoilers, but it's only a week or so before the game's and even then usually it's just a detail of the story or some sort of hidden reward. This was the entire damn story just laid out in a blog post for the world to see before the game was even announced. Hell I couldn't care less about CoD, but this is still ridiculous.

Again Patrick, I commend you on not sinking to such levels for the sake of being an edgy journalist. Kotaku just done screwed the pooch on this one.
