Giant Bomb's Game of the Year, 2009

This is it! Our overall pick for the best game that the last year had to offer.

From the deliberate shock and awe of Modern Warfare 2 to Rocksteady's uniquely stylish distillation of the Batman mythos, 2009 was a year that brought us a lot of intense video-game experiences. But none featured more visceral excitement, stunning visuals, and uncontainable momentum than our pick for Game of the Year.

Game of the Year, 2009

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

No Caption Provided
Part of the appeal for Uncharted 2 is that there's no gimmick, no hook--the appeal is that this is a very excellently crafted game experience. It's fun to play and a pleasure to look at. But that's awfully reductive, so let's get into what it is, specifically, about Uncharted 2 that makes it our game of the year.

First off, there's your main character, Nathan Drake. Despite his incredible, preternatural physical abilities, Nathan Drake is no superhero. He is, for all intents and purposes, a dude in a t-shirt. A dude in a t-shirt who just so happens to be racing around the globe in search of an artifact of supernatural significance, juggling an exceptionally evil Eastern European heavy and some duplicitous companions with their own agendas, while dodging a near-constant hail of gunfire, falling buildings, and helicopters. Considering the incredible situation he's gotten himself into, it's impressive that he's able to come off as Average Joe as he does, but it's a key part of the character's appeal, and the game's overall success. That the first time you see Nathan he's sitting on a wrecked train with a bullet in his gut reinforces that this guy is incredibly fallible, which brings a sense of danger to everything he does, despite his actual resilience and the infinite opportunities the game affords you to try and try again. Nolan North, who provides Nathan's voice, deserves much credit for establishing the tone for a character that doesn't quite know what he's doing, but is going to do it anyway, hoping for the best.

Uncharted 2 is also an absolutely gorgeous-looking game, the best we've seen in 2009, which puts it very high in the running for best-looking game of all time. The colorful, exotic environments are rich with detail, and the game's pacing is so relentless that you never linger in one place long enough to even begin trying to pick at it. A combination of performance capture and crazy technology that we have little hope of understanding produce character animation that impresses simply by looking natural in a way that few games would even know how to approach, let alone have the technical skill to actually pull it off. Uncharted 2 aims for a look that's just on Hollywood side of real with its world and its characters, which it pulls off while deftly avoiding the uncanny valley. It says a lot that the game is able to pull of subtle stuff like convincing facial animation and realistic-looking hair just as capably as it is a breakneck chase sequence or a fight with a helicopter.

It's one hell of a production, but Uncharted 2 isn't just about shiny things, it's got a real tactile feel to all of the running, jumping, climbing, and shooting that you'll engage in. And this is all to speak nothing of the game's highly credible co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, which leverage both the strength of the shooting and traversal mechanics which are the backbone of Uncharted 2's single-player experience. Too often do we see single-player games paired up with an afterthought of a multiplayer game, or vice versa, but Uncharted 2 nails it with both, and without ever compromising the tone of the game.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the total package, a crowd-pleasing thrill ride that's incredibly difficult to put down and remarkably easy to recommend without ever feeling like it's pandering to the lowest-common denominator. It's funny, it's exciting, it's beautiful, it's nerve-wracking, and it's our 2009 game of the year.

It's the safe pick.  Fanboys aside, you're not opening up for argument or debate.  I personally had to put a lot of thought if I liked this or AC2 better and while ultimately put AC2 ontop, will not say "you're wrong" to the pick.

Well, I'm not sure they went with it as a 'safe' pick.  There's 2-3 games that anyone could vote for GOTY and be totally justified, and maybe 2-3 more that could be argued for.  So really, as long as they went with Batman, Uncharted, or maybe AC2 they'd be in pretty safe water with the fanbase.  MW2, Demon's Souls, maybe inFamous (or even Shadow Complex) could be in the 'argued for' category.

I really want to play this game, yet I don't have a PS3.. damn, I wish that console wasn't so useless in the presence of a 360 I already have.

I know it's good but Uncharted 2 isn't that as good as people keep saying. It's overhyped. The multiplayer is mediocre, in order for a game to win GOTY, ALL the components need to be amazing.

I'm just happy that Modern Warfare 2 didn't get it. I love Modern Warfare 2, but I feel Uncharted 2, Arkham Asylum and Dragon Age: Origins were more deserving games, and I'm glad one of them won it.

Good job guys!

I would agree.  It was either Brad or Jeff that said in their video that heading into the final quarter of the year, it was looking like there may not even have been 10 games worth putting on a top 10.  Thankfully a bevy of games came on strong that could have made a case for GOTY.

After this year, so many different games can publish "2009 Game Of the Year" on their cover because so many respected outlets voted differently which to be honest, is kinda awesome.

I thought it was going to be Batman AA from what I heard on bombcasts. I recall Ryan at one point saying that Batman was doing it for him a little more on an episode of the podcast--though he hadn't finished it yet.  Uncharted 2 definitely deserves it too.  Wonder if it would have been a clusterf*ck as Gametrailers GOTY has right now if they put MW2 (video rated like 3.5 or something)--internet is serious business.

Great pick.  Uncharted 2 was a "game-changer" in my books.  The animations looked extremely realistic, the cinematic were well crafted despite the fact that player still have full control of Drake, and story is told with a great balance genuine humor and eye-catching action.  I also have to give Naughty Dog credit for how they depicted the characters in their game.  While each character is molded from a known movie stereotype, they do not feel like caricatures.  They are fully developed characters that you can care for, sympathize with, and - for the bad guys - hate.

Still, I was kinda hoping for Batman AA to win it, even though Uncharted 2 is my personal GOTY.  Uncharted 2 is going to sweep plenty of GOTY awards and Batman AA deserves at least a few kudos.

I am glad Uncharted won but Batman is a worthy alternative.

While I agree, I am a little surprised.

Looking at all the top 10 lists literally all the staff had Batman on there and you could not say that about Uncharted. Yes, I understand it is not a weighted voting system or anything like that, but overall opinion seemed to favor Batman on all but two of the lists.

Also of note was the fact that Jeff had Batman ranked higher on his list and it seems that his choice usually wins out.   For example, last year the crew was split between MGS4 and GTA IV.  Eventually, Ryan changed his vote and Brad relented.

I am also glad Modern Warfare 2 did not win.   It is a good game that deserves consideration but there are significant flaws in all three game modes and the whole enterprise felt a bit soulless.   A good game, but there are several, better, options out there.

I think Batman got plenty of kudos from the GB staff, even if it didn't win GOTY.  Best multiplatform game isn't something to shake a stick at, and I think they've made their appreciation of both games plenty clear.

Was expecting Batman or a tie to be honest. Last year Jeff's voice dominated the cast and the crew cowered in fear and gave in. Glad to see that everyone stuck their ground til the end. Surpirsing though by a lot of the negativity I heard from Jeff over Batman, he stuck with it so long. He seemed so into the Uncharted discussion as well, while getting frustrated over the gargoyles in Batman. The blue dudes in Uncharted were only there for a short period of time compared to the original Uncharted with nearly half of the game being creatures.

Heavy Rain or Bioshock 2  for 2010 GOTY.

I came away from Arkham Asylum thinking it was a really great Batman game.

Whereas I felt Uncharted 2 was a staggering achievement.

totally agree with this choice.  As great as Batman and Assassins Creed 2 are, UC2 is simply on another level.  It isn't quite as robust mechanically as the other two games that I have mentioned, but the entire experience is just so brilliantly paced and highly polished that it stands above everything else released this.  Again, good choice GB.

no need to cry.  The bombcast was pretty funny....GOTY was so hotly debated between the 2 games.  It almost got to the point of being ridiculous nitpicks.  I think Batman ended up losing because it had too many gargoyle statues.

But anyways, good awards this year. I thought it would come down to Batman and Uncharted so I would be happy either way. Great podcast too.

I have to say, I'm really disappointed.    I thought Batman would get the award, especially after Jeff was so pro-Batman at the beginning.  I agree that Uncharted had the better story but, in my opinion, it was close enough that Batman's edge in Gameplay pushes it over the edge in my opinion.  Even Nolan North and the Uncharted cast are canceled out by Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy on the Batman side.  The Jorker, in my opinion, is a much better villain than the guy from Uncharted 2, he didn't even seem like much of an evil leader, just a brute that another fit second chair better.  Also, the Uncharted multiplayer wasn't great and doesn't factor into my decision very much.  It seems like Jeff just got tired of it and went with the Gargoyles as an excuse and thats disappointing.  Honestly, it is a little strange to listen to the whole podcast and see that throughout the whole thing Jeff and Vinny were kind of pushed aside and Ryan and Brad pushed their opinions through in the debated categories.

Long time lurker, first time poster. After reading this comment I felt I had to say something...

1. According to your post, you haven't even played Uncharted 2, so your opinion and comments hold absolutely no weight whatsoever.

2. Your post starts with "I don't mean to start a flame war..." However, then proceeds to end with, " In other words, fuck this game." What exactly were you hoping to accomplish by posting this rubbish. Save us the read next time and don't post anything. .

3. Please back up your pathetic rants with some basis or substance in the future. Something with some insight and reasoning, oh wait... I guess I am asking too much of you.

I was listening to the Bombcast and when they finally got to the GOTY discussion, they said it's over. And then Jeff said Batman: Arkham Asylum was the best game to come out this year and I was totally shocked. I expected them to pick Uncharted easily over Batman. Batman: Arkham Asylum is my game of the year, but I haven't played Uncharted yet.

I think you're a letting your desire for Batman to win GOTY make you see things that aren't there.  Jeff said he was 50/50, Brad and Ryan felt Uncharted 2 and if he was 50/50 it would make sense to pick Uncharted 2 to break the deadlock.

Also the Uncharted 2 multiplayer is great, whether or not you enjoy it shouldn't discount its quality.  Rest assured it is very good.

I think everyone can agree on all this debate that Batman and Uncharted are both amazing games, and everyone should get Batman.  If you have a PS3, you should get Uncharted 2 as well.  After this year, you should really consider getting a PS3 too if you don't already have one (and then get Uncharted 2 :P)

It's not like either game is bad by any means.

He makes a compelling arguement. Especially from someone who I'm sure hasn't even touched the game. What you "believe" doesn't matter. Unless you actually PLAYED the game, shut up. Seriously, I really doubt you're this stupid. At least, I hope not. Think before you post something so offensively stupid.

@SteepInKline: If you think the award is stupid, why'd you get so worked up about it? No need to curse out the product of someone's two years' labor over a stupid award. And besides, everything he said is perfectly legitimate, regardless of the award's integrity: you did betray a certain level of idiocy by criticizing a game you've never played, another level by claiming never to have played it in the same paragraph. In addition, you pretty much re-invalidated your own argument by recognizing (probably by some stroke of brilliance, by your standards) that not all great games are the best game of 2009. So what's to say that one of your "amazing and revolutionary games" should hold this title?

Also, why did you feel compelled to mention that your top 3 were multiplatform? Was it a slip in an obscured attempt to promote the 360 over the PS3? Were you one of those people who couldn't accept that inFAMOUS is better than Prototype? Normally, I don't accuse strangers of such gross fanboyism with such incidental evidence, but the aforementioned levels of idiocy of which you've proven yourself capable make me suspicious.

The thing is, you have every right to have whatever opinion you want for GOTY, you don't need to have played every game ever to have an opinion on that, that is obvious.  However, you do make yourself look a bit ridiculous when you claim a certain title should NOT be considered game of the year without playing it.

The statement "I think Batman is the best game this year, I played it and love it" is totally legitimate.  It's an opinion based on your experiences and nobody can really say you're wrong.
The statement "Uncharted 2 is not the best game this year, but I've never played it" is not.  It's not an opinion based on experiences, it's an opinion based on...well, I'm not even sure what.  System preferences, need to be different, something.

The criticism here is that you're saying Uncharted 2 did not deserve the award, but you haven't played it.  You could say "in my experiences X game deserves it" but you really can't say Uncharted 2 doesn't, without having played it.  Make sense?

" I have to say, I'm really disappointed. "
Well, when I was saying that the multiplayer wasn't  very good  (I found it to be decent but not exceptional)  I was more or less shifting to my personal opinion on game of the year but I didn't make that very clear and, yes, I was pulling for Batman but I honestly don't think Jeff was 50/50 at the beginning when he said that Batman was better than Uncharted.  And at the end Jeff didn't seem really convinced and just seemed tired, I don't think I was imagining that.  I just think that they maybe should have taken a break like they did last year when the debate got very nit-picky.  I do think that Uncharted is a very worthy winner but just was really hoping that Arkham Asylum would get some game of the year nod and this was, in my opinion, its last shot.  I am not saying that I am not biased, just that I was disappointed with how it played out in the podcast.  I wish they had gotten to a point where everyone seemed good with the decision and not a case of one side just wanting to stop, which is what it seemed like.

Excuse me, I just deleted all of my comments. You know what that means? YOU ALL HAVE WON. STOP, PLEASE. I'm sorry, I was quick to react, I've kinda got an issue with anger. Please understand that, and understand that in spite of the fact that I don't exactly agree with Uncharted 2 being on the top of the list, I wholeheartedly endorse Arkham Asylum as the runner-up.

That, and from the little that I've heard of Nathan Drake, I can without a doubt agree with the Giant Bomb crew that he's the best Nolan North character thus far.

Now, can we all please be civil?

I would reply to SteepInKline's second post but he seems to have deleted it. Not exactly sure why you would write all that and then delete it but ANYWAYS, if you're still reading this buddy, your arguement is still completely senseless. You don't have an opinion because you didn't play the game. And even if you do consider the nonsense that you posted "an opinion", it is not valid in anyway considering you have experience NOTHING the game has to offer. So, yes, I will insult you because I disagree with what you have to say. Because what you have to say is completely ridiculous and resembles something that would be posted on GameTrailers by a 13 year old Xbox fanboy.

I wonder if threads like this are common on GiantBomb, or if these are just the caliber of mutants that only emerge from their lunacy cocoons for meaningless - albeit fun - game of the year awards.

Anyway, great work this week fellas. I appreciate your efforts. Just two things, should a similar approach for game of the year be taken in the future; 1) if something similar like this happens next year, can you put the game of the year podcast up well before the the article? Nice to hear the discussion without knowing the verdict. And 2) I'd prefer it if the console-specific awards had been spaced out over the week like your individual choices were, as well as their accompanying podcast segments. Would've been nice to have a bit more content every day this week - excluding today - and to have this 3 and half hour podcast be a more reasonable 1 and a half, as well as every other podcast this week being bumped up from 10 - 15 minutes, to 30 - 45.

Hopefully this doesn't sound "complain-y." I love the site, loved all the content this week, clicked every link, listened to every podcast, made my list, checked it twice... awesome stuff. Thanks.

I honestly didn't think the multiplayer was anything too special in Uncharted 2. It was kinda fun, but it wasn't really anything original. The single player was still excellent though and the game is my overall goty as well.

@Milkman: The post immediately above yours explains it all.

@Addfwyn: Okay. Now I understand what everyone's saying. With that in mind, allow me to make the following statement:

Batman Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2, and Borderlands are pretty awesome games, and I would've liked to have seen any of them receive GOTY. Once again, I agree with Batman: AA as runner-up.

Are we all clear on my feelings on the matter?

EDIT: By the way, I apologize for turning this thread into a huge drama-filled train wreck. Though it may appear otherwise, I really didn't mean to start a flame war of any kind, and I'm sorry to everyone that I've annoyed. I guess what I'm trying to say is, please don't think of me as one of those assholes that deliberately starts a flame war just to start a flame war.

It's entertaining to see how many people think calling a game "GOTY" means anything. Guess what, just because your favorite game wasn't given an arbitrary award doesn't mean that game was any worse.
