Hey, Want To Play Borderlands At Gearbox This Friday?

How's this for a contest? I'm heading down to Texas for QuakeCon this week to get a look at id Software's new mega-texture-athon Rage, and this Friday I'll also be swinging by Gearbox to see the latest on Borderlands. And so will two of you! Gearbox is kindly allowing us to select two members of the Giant Bomb community to visit the developer's office on Friday (that's the 14th) and play Borderlands a full two months before release. Be on your best behavior, OK? Wipe your feet before entering.

Here's the word straight from Gearbox.

Two members of the Giant Bomb community are invited to join Gearbox Software for an afternoon of Borderlands co-op! This Friday the 14th at 4pm two Giant Bomb members will get to play the Gearbox Software ground breaking RPS (role playing shooter) due on shelves October 20th. Come join us!

We'll run this like any other contest: To enter, simply comment on this story and include the text "GB4LYFE" (no quotes) at the end of your post. At 3pm tomorrow (that's Wednesday, 8/12) I'll cut off the entries and randomly select two of you to get the business. The winners will be notified by PM of specific instructions for showing up.

NOTE: You must live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, or be able to get yourself there by 4pm this Friday, to be eligible. If you don't qualify for one of those criteria, please refrain from entering the contest. It will make life easier for everyone. You can still comment on this story if you want to discuss it; just don't include the GB4LYFE tag so your posts won't be counted as contest entries.

I was all ready to make the 37hr drive (would've just squeaked into FW if chosen) but no Brad? Bah!
Well, perhaps I'll save the stalking for my next training trip in SF - I actually cruised Sausalito last time I was there (I had to drive the bridge at least once and hey, whaddya know? it's right there :)

To be fair, my favorite season is Rainy Tornado season. I mean black skies with and semi-predictable patches of swirling death contrasting on barren, cattle-corpse strewn plains? What could be more metal?

Also, this long, three-part CD Action interview (be sure to watch all three parts, the points I make are in parts 2 and 3) made me feel slapped twice in a row. Rage will feature neither a dynamic day/night cycle nor much modability, as admitted by the Carmack himself.

As a generally outspoken nerd myself, I would LOVE to have this guy's public speaking skills. I lack the organizational skills. 10 minutes of Carmack goes by in seconds.

edit: upon a second listen, it seems id are going the route of Valve's Source engine, with an extremely modular core. He says he can't, in the foreseeable future, see starting from scratch on a new engine (late in part 2).

Well I do live in DFW Fort worth to be exact. I read articles on your web site, just signed up to get chance to play borderlands early. More interested as in why the new art direction the game was fine the way it was. Now I'm curious to see if this new direction is as good as they"re hoping. If I win and get a chance to play, if no problem with 2K I will surely let everyone know.

@kingofthahill: I would also agree the art style was just fine how it was. Then again, I was interested in the concept itself from the get-go (I was one of the old-school Fallout purists who was actually initiated into PC gaming via the first Quake).

However, the art style for games tend to rarely surpass the feel of the concept art itself. Matching the gameplay to the style presented in the concept art is rarely a bad thing. It seems the art team was looking for something to do while the gameplay side finalized things. Gamespot's Crosshairs has a lengthy interview with Gearbox PR rep (and CEO, turns out -- slap me in the face) Randy Goddamn Pitchford (the second) about half-way through the video. Recommended view. This begs the question, is 'Goddamn' a better middle name than 'Fucking' ?

If only the actual style Warcraft looked like the original Chris Metzen drawings I fell in love with, I might actually waste 10 bucks monthly on a grindfest that wasn't an ever-lasting festival of poorly-produced cacophonously-hardcore metal music.

I live in Dallas (well actually Royse City-30 miles away) and I can take off work and drive myself. On top of that, I am a huge Gearbox fan. I am the clear choice to win this contest.
