In Case You're Wondering Why There Are No Porsches in Forza 4, it's Because of EA

EA's exclusive license with Porsche will block the brand from appearing in Turn 10's upcoming sim racer.

No Caption Provided

EA has had the exclusive rights to the Porsche brand of sports cars for some time now, but that hasn't prevented other developers from sub-licensing Porsche vehicles through EA. Most notably, Turn 10 managed to include 35 different Porsche models in its last simulation racer, Forza Motorsport 3.

Evidently, the days of playing friendly with exclusive licenses are over for EA (yes, I'm aware of the irony of that statement given the whole NFL thing--just go with it, okay?), as according to an interview with creative director Dan Greenwalt up at ForzaMotorsport.net, Turn 10 and Microsoft have made repeated attempts to find an equitable solution to once again sub-license the Porsche brand for its upcoming sequel, Forza Motorsport 4. However, those requests ultimately fell on deaf ears.

For Forza 4, we were looking forward to adding even more Porsche cars, and we were especially looking forward to featuring multiple Porsche experiences in our new Autovista mode. In the end, however, EA couldn’t see their way towards collaborating again. We’ve asked our contacts at EA to reconsider their position frequently and regularly over the last 18 months. We also reached out to various influential people in gaming to lobby on our behalf, and on your behalf, but that was to no avail.

The turnabout in attitude likely has something to do with the introduction of EA's Shift series, which it views as a viable competitor in the simulation racing market. Given that fact, it's not altogether surprising, if still a bit disappointing, that EA would choose to keep its licenses close to its vest, so as to avoid aiding a direct competitor.

Nonetheless, Turn 10 had hoped to work with EA once again, and was disappointed with EA's refusal to acquiesce, especially given Turn 10's own willingness to work with other developers with its own exclusive licenses.

While we respect EA’s need to run their business as they see fit, we’ve regularly collaborated in the past and hope we can find our way back to that approach. Forza had the exclusive license for all Ferrari cars, for example, on the Xbox and PC platforms. But at the end of the day, we’ve always found that we just weren’t willing to block other racing games from having Ferraris outright, as we believed that this would do nothing but hurt the racing ecosystem.

It is most certainly EA's prerogative to do as it pleases with the licenses it holds, but for as much as the Shift series attempts to dig into the sim racing market, it's arguable whether or not that series is really relevant enough at this juncture to claim that collaboration with Turn 10 would harm its stature. Suddenly blocking a developer from including an entire line of vehicles isn't exactly the kind of move that engenders good feelings within the racing game community, either.

Since it looks like there's nothing to be done about this prior to Forza 4's release, players will simply have to make do with a trio of RUF vehicles. RUF, as you may or may not be aware, is the manufacturer known for completely reworking Porsche bodies into custom sports cars. It's likely little consolation for those who had hoped to dig into any of the 35 originally planned Porsche models, but hey, at least it's something.

@Brodehouse: The sim-racing genre is a bit different. The inclution of licenced cars is a huge part of the experience(since its simulating real-life racing and you can't do that with fake cars) and its not like the gameplay in Forza will suffer by them adding cars.

Fuck off EA! If we can't get Porche in Forza 4 now, so what about the Pagani Huayra? The Huayra is an amazing car but apparently it's exclusive to Shift 2.

Im fine with Ruf. They are Porsche bodys and chassis with parts RUF makes in house put into them. Also, keeping Porsche's out of Forza 4 is not going to make me buy shift2 or shift3. So go ahead EA, ive already preordered the collectors edition of F4, and none of your racing games.

Not to defend EA on this matter(because its kind of a dick move but still completly understandable) but them preventing competators from using a license that they own vs. running every single gamefranchise into the ground and taking a studio and putting it to work on a game genre thats not really in their wheelhouse and then closing it when the game doesn't perform well is totally the same thing.

EA is downright delusional if they think Shift can hold a candle to Forza in the sim department.

As they are well known for, total dick move by EA. But I also don't buy this Turn 10 stooges spin on the matter.

" Forza had the exclusive license for all Ferrari cars, for example, on the Xbox and PC platforms. Sure, Microsoft just bought the exclusive rights to the Ferrari license not because they wanted to deny it to competitors but because they wanted to help the racing ecosystem. Right. I'm calling bullshit. Walk the walk Turn 10 before you start talking the talk with regards to other assholes wielding exclusive rights.

And that's why I hate EA.They try to license as many things as possible and then don't let anyone make good games. They got the NFL license and always make crappy Madden games, when 2k were making unbelievable football games. Also they got the license to the NBA All-Star weekend,so NBA 2k can't use their great slam dunk contest mechanics, they also have the FIBA license,so they have all the national teams although the rosters don't even look like in real life. Now they don't allow one of the greatest racing sim franchises to use Porsche, because they want to compete with their crappy Shift "simulator" series(?).

It seems that after finally starting to get the gaming community to not see them as the Evil Empire, EA are now making every effort to reclaim that crown from Activision.

EA is doing nothing with their Porsche license.

Forza 3: 35 Porsche models
NEED FOR SPEED -  Shift 2: 10 Porsche models
NEED FOR SPEED - The Run: 5 Porsche models

Shift 3 is not coming since EA has cut of Slightly Mad Studio's funding and support for Shift2, they have also said they cannot release patches because EA doesn't have the time to Q/A them.

Meanwhile, neither iRacing on PC, Forza 4 on the 360, or GT5 on the PS3 have Porsche cars.

Activision running franchises into the ground, Ubisoft DRM-ing their games to death, EA castrating virtual resources for their sense of deluded grandeur, and GameStop looting their own inventory to undercut their competition.

WTF gaming industry?

I know it's the "in" thing to crap on EA, but I get the feeling this is more about money than anything else.  Micro "if-you're-on-PSN-first-don't-call-us" Soft probably doesn't want to meet EA's asking price to use the license.  Everyone is playing hardball in this tight economy, so I can't fault EA for doing whatever they can to further their own invested interests.

If licensed cars are a 'huge part of the experience' then it should matter to developers/publishers of sim racing games to acquire those licenses before their competitors do. I'm sure you can criticize EA for not sharing something they paid for, but the games industry isn't a nice little game of hacky-sack, it's a constant competition to provide the best product. EA doesn't have to share their advantages with Microsoft anymore than Turn 10 should share their code with Slightly Mad.

I can't imagine EA sending out a press release, "we really wanted to make a Warhammer 40k game, but THQ and Relic have exclusivity and won't let us, for shame."

That sucks. I mean It's fine that EA does whatever with their license but exclusivity licenses for what is basically badges in the game totally suck. Having Porsche's in Shift or any of the other NFS franchises doesn't lead me to buy one over the other, and in my opinion it's not even the right badge to take exclusivity either since Porsche's are not really dream supercars (maybe Carrera GT or 918 Spyder) but compared to Lambo or Ferrari, they don't have that 14 year old allure that you want in a racing game. I'm generally a devils advocate for what EA does in most cases, and I understand the whole "Well we bought this, so we should probably make better use of it rather than throwing it away" but it still just sucks. Maybe Turn 10 can release a bunch of cars with the same characteristics of 911's and Boxters but just in a different body shape and different badge, I'd be happy with that.

A couple of years ago McDonalds bought Boston Market and sort of sabotaged it because they believed that people chose Boston Market rotisserie chicken meals over their new chicken sandwiches. It made zero sense with that and this situation with EA and Forza makes zero sense. A car manufacturer being in a racing game is not the deciding factor when choosing a game. Yes would I have loved to see, for example Ferrari, in Hot Pursuit? Yes, but them not being in the game didn't influence my choice in any way. Porche being in Forza or not won't be the deciding factor in whether you get Shift and/or Run. It will be the merits of the game.

If that's the case then wouldn't it be easier for Turn 10 to go directly to Porsche and point out that they do a better job of representing their brand than EA. I'm sure the guys at Porsche would be able to apply some pressure on EA to get them to play nice.

This is the same reason Gran Turismo 3 didn't have real Porsches if I remember correctly. EA also licensed WWII jeeps which is why the Company of Heroes jeeps are slightly off modelled and have the internet famous 3A5UX5 (EA SUCKS) on their textures.

Remember when everybody seemed to really dislike EA for a long time? Then all of a sudden things went quiet for the hate towards them and Activision came along and basically became what we feared EA would become, and by comparision along with the general 'not doing super dumb things for a while' EA started looking alright again. Lately EA is doing nothing but looking dumb again though, huge spike in dumb really.
