Introducing Call of Duty XP 2011, BlizzCon for Call of Duty Fans

Learn what $150 for a ticket will get you access to.

How many Call of Duty fans would travel to Los Angeles and pay $150 for a two-day event featuring the first hands-on with Modern Warfare 3, the chance to play real-life paintball based on a Modern Warfare 2 map and other ridiculousness? Activision's betting 6,000 people will.

Activision's calling this Call of Duty XP 2011. It takes place on September 2 and 3, within a 12-acre compound in California that's going to "feel like you stepped into the game," according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, whom I recently spoke to on the phone about the event.

You might know Hirschberg's name because I've published parts of his internal memos to Activision on Giant Bomb before. That didn't exactly come up during our conversation yesterday.

There are a couple of things to note about the price tag associated with Call of Duty XP 2011. BlizzCon, which Hirshberg admitted to deeply examining while planning, is charging $175. In this case, Activision is not profiting from the tickets. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales are going into the Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit that helps transition veterans into civilian life.

"The event itself will cost us considerably more than we would have recouped from ticket sales, anyway," said Hirshberg. "Part of it is about raising money for a great cause, part of it's about just giving a kick-ass experience for the fans."

Attendees will have a chance to go hands-on with Modern Warfare 3 for the first time.
Attendees will have a chance to go hands-on with Modern Warfare 3 for the first time.
== TEASER ==

Hirshberg noted the $150 tag fell about in line with the going rate for similar events.

"When we decided to make it 100% of the proceeds donation to Call of Duty Endowment, we wanted to make that a meaningful donation number," he said. "It felt about right, and I think that for $150, we're going to deliver a two-day experience that will be an unbelievable value to anyone who attends."

What're you getting for your money?

First crack at playing Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer and Spec-Ops modes, a chance to compete in a 32-team bracketed tournament for more than one million in cash and prizes, panels with Call of Duty developers, live shows from unnamed "AAA entertainment," an on-site museum, access to a paintball setup modeled after the "Scrapyard" map from Modern Warare 2, some mysterious exclusives available only to those who attend the event, a usable zip line, a full-scale, playable recreation of The Pit, a chance to eat in Burger Town and some other unannounced "attractions."

If you're not attending, much of the event will be recorded and released online.

"It's all about the experience," said Hirshberg. "It's all about the fact that the game is about mastery, the game is about investment of time and improving and constantly becoming better as you compete. Those are the pillars of this experience. It's all about bringing the experience of the game to life."

The full scope of Call of Duty: Elite, both free and paid, will be revealed at the event.
The full scope of Call of Duty: Elite, both free and paid, will be revealed at the event.

There are no plans to expand the event outside of Los Angeles at the moment, partially because most of the developers are already located in the area. During the event, many of them will be working on Modern Warfare 3, which is already locked into a release date of November 8.

"Obviously, they're going to be hard at work putting the finishing touches on Modern Warare 3 when this happens," he said, "and we wanted to make it easy for them to participate, since they're a huge part of the attraction of being there."

One of the big reveals at Call of Duty XP 2011 will be full clarity on Call of Duty: Elite, the service Activision recently introduced that's stacking on top of Call of Duty. Part of it will be free, part of it will cost money. The biggest cause for confusion when it was first announced was which parts would require players to use a wallet, which Hirshberg promised would be cleared up.

"Part of what we struggled with in the launch," he said, "was because it's so baked into Modern Warfare 3, some of the features weren't demonstrable. We wanted to do a beta, so we had to choose between a rock and a hard place. Launching without a full feature set or doing a beta, we chose the beta because we thought ultimately it's going to let us have a better product at launch. At Call of Duty XP, you'll see the feature set and everything that's free and everything that's paid for will be explained."

Tickets for Call of Duty XP 2011 go on sale on July 19. Are you in?

I'm not into Call of Duty enough to really get anything out of an event like this, but it sounds pretty great if you're a CoD fan. Plus you get to walk away knowing you supported an extremely worthy cause when it's over.

Some of the people in the comments here need to give their heads a shake.

It's a great cause so nobody can knock that but I have a hard time supporting Call of Duty anymore. This was West and Zampella's brain child and I hate how things went down. Let's also be honest Robby Kotick is a...........! You get the point! I still buy Activision published games just can't see myself buying another COD game. Just my opinion, everyone who goes I hope thy have fun and it goes to a great cause, enjoy!

Well I thought this was pretty silly until I read that all profits are going to charity. That is actually respectable. Now I hope that 6000 people or whatever the limit is sign up for it, because it's for a good cause.

yes, the money will be going to a very worthy cause, but this stinks of nothing more than a PR stunt from activision, trying to sell MW 3 and garner good will. we all know that the entire event will be covered in the 360 billboards and most likely co-sponsered by MS. so sure all the ticket sales will be going to a good cause but that event's costs will not be a loss for activison in any way shape or form. hell i will bet that its built into the PR budget for MW 3.

And i have no problem if a bunch of people want to pay $150 to go play paint ball and support the charity but don't be fooled by activisions motives.

@DeanoXD: Relax, pal. Enough with the conspiracy theories. It'll be fun for major fans and raise money for a good cause. There's nothing wrong or evil about what they're doing. It's advertising and creating good will for their product. That's smart business.

I'm not even a big CoD fan but I find the haters more annoying than the fans these days.

The proceeds of this are going to a charity, how can anyone be against this?  A little expensive, but for the people with the money to spare it sounds like it could be fun...

@Scodiac: i never say i hated anything, i never said i think people should not support this event, i never said it was bad buisness, i just stated my opionion on their motivations for doing it and i commented on their statment of it being a total loss. now when we are five years in on the annual CoD charity event then good on them, but i still will not believe that they are taking a total loss for doing so. because all charities try to cover costs through corperate sponsership thats how they are able to give what they raise away.

This is the worst...

(From the Call of Duty Experience homepage) "Working out your trigger finger really works up an appetite. So grab burgers and fries at Burger Town. It's time to eat like a soldier, sort of."

This is the best!!

I think I'll save my money for the ineluctable "Toobin' Con". It's gonna happen!

What's with all the complaining about this just being a PR stunt? First off, duh... But at the same time, Activision doesn't need to do anything like this. MW3 isn't exactly a game that no one has ever heard of and is in need of exposure to increase sales. They could just release the game on November 8 without any marketing campaign whatsoever and still sell 34 billion copies.

I applaud their decision to host an even like this. It sounds really fun (and ridiculously over the top). There seems to be so much stuff to do that I think $150 ($175?) is way too cheap. I fully expected it to cost $500 or so.

Also, I'd like to add that this probably won't be full of "fucking COD players." I doubt the average COD player will attend this. I imagine the demographic of this event will be 24-32 year olds that are mature enough for this to be fun for everyone. Yeah, there might be a few jerk-offs that show up, but they'll be the "local talent" and not care about the event. Others will be people that could fly out and cherish the moments because it's not something that happens all the time in their area.

Although I'd like to add this... If everything there is about microtransactions (the paintball, zipline, food, etc.), that entire post is null and void. I didn't even think about that until I thought about it (makes sense).

The real question is whether or not the Giant Bomb guys are going.

I can picture the glorious coverage right now. I know there's a part of me that wants to go - just to see what kind of crazy audience turns up - and witness all the fist-bumps.

Why? There is no lore to discuss, and it's just a single franchise. The whole thing will basically be a demo booth for the next installment then? And maybe they'll throw in some announcements about next years game. It seems completely pointless to dedicate a weekend for that.

I'm not interested in Call of Duty, but the donation to charity aspect of this is really unexpected. Surprisingly enough, this all sounds like a pretty cool idea if you are a huge fan of the series, even if 150$ is a steep price.

Well there it's a choice between giving millions to charity, OR giving millions to charity and looking good to the press.
