Metallica Gets Magnetic, Heroic

More Guitar Hero synergy than you can shake a drumstick at.

The return of the logo found on countless high-school army jackets.
The return of the logo found on countless high-school army jackets.
The plastic-guitar arms race between Rock Band and Guitar Hero continues to ramp up with today's announcement that Metallica's upcoming album, Death Magnetic, will be released as DLC for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock this Friday, coinciding with the album's proper retail release. The Guitar Hero III version of Death Magnetic will run you about $18 for either the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 version, and it will also be forward-compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour.

Considering how much Activision and Harmonix were both talking up the inclusion of Metallica in their games at E3, this is probably a pretty big deal to someone, though my Metallica needs begin and end at The Black Album. Maybe this speaks more to my decade-plus of indifference towards Metallica than anything else, but I found it baffling that one of the tracks from Death Magnetic is titled "The Unforgiven III". First off, there was a "The Unforgiven II"? And second, can it be a very good sign when a band resorts to writing sequels to 17-year-old songs?

First off Ryan, if that is your real name, The Unforgiven III is a very good song. Maybe if you take a listen to the new album (it's all over YouTube and Metallica's own website) your Metallica needs can begin and end with Death Magnetic.

Yes, there was an The Unforgiven III.

Personally, Master of Puppets is the greatest Album Metallica'll ever release.

But this Death Magnetic is the most promising since The Black Album

Yeah, they are putting two versions of one song out...I think it's the one where James is saying retarded lyrics like "Suicide, I've already died, and something blah blah why don't you shut the door?"  I don't know, it didn't interest me much for more than a laugh.  Either way, the other version just has an extended solo.  I think it's pretty crappy that...ya know...they are putting out this album, and then they are like "Hey, Kirk wrote this extended solo on this song just for the Guitar Hero crowd...so if you are a REAL Metallica fan, you gotta buy all six editions of our album, the digital download, and the GH III download!!!"

Ugh.  Stupid money...

Either way, just wanted to say "Kids, go back to school and learn to spell with some real grammarz..."

Yup, they have three unforgiven songs now, I personally like all of them. I have heard the album, and I like it, but I don't know if I will download it on GH3, I am kind of done with that game. Now, if the album was on Rock Band, I would defintely buy it.

Any metallica before and including ...and justice for all are awesome. Anything after, sucks hard (save for the black album, that only kinda sucked). Supposedly the new one is like old-school metallica, which i want to check out. But the new track packs sound pretty cool.

No, the one they're releasing multiple versions of is Suicide & Redemption, the instrumental track on DM. The one you were thinking of is Cyanide (which does suck).

i'm not too picky...kinda kinda enjoyed listening to all their albums...

i'm being kind of hypocritical though, since i hated St. Anger :\

friday couldn't come any sooner though...i already listened to the album through "alternative means" that i know fully well everyone here knows about, and for what it's worth Death Magnetic is exponentially better than St. Anger...good enough reason for me to want to buy it.

Oops...forgive me for that blunder.  The crappy live recording on their MySpace for "Cyanide" didn't give me a chance to really tell what the lyrics were.  I just remembered seeing something about a song called "Suicide & Redemption" and automatically put the two together.

It's kind of like how Protest The Hero has a song called "Blindfolds Aside"...and yet never actually say the words in the song (which is fine), but then a couple songs later, they have a lyric that says "with blindfolds aside" and you get all confused.  lol

I'm definitely going to buy the album, and I'm sure that I'll enjoy it after a few spins.  Like I said, though, I just wish they wouldn't cater to all the Metallica elitests and would just write whatever they wanted instead.  If this is what they wanted to write, then cool...but for some reason, with the way the drums sound in comparison to their earlier work (read: exactly the same), it seems like they are reaching pretty hard to make sure people don't flame them on internet boards.

I can guarantee, though, that the album still won't compare to Protest's "Fortress", Machine Head's "The Blackening", or Testament's new disc.  = P

You should have done some research before talking nonsense, Ryan...
Looking at your mustache one would think that you were a Motorhead or Metallica fan (like someone else said).
In reality you like The Killers and some other pop rock (mainstream) here and there.  But I still like you as a reviewer... except for that condemned 2 review.

I forgive you Ryan...

"Metallica fans are funny." - Jeff

No need to get in this Jeff, you know we love you... don't push it.

Meh. Only time I'm going to invest in Guitar Hero is if/when they release some Iron Maiden. The Number of the Beast and The Trooper were awesome[even though the vocals on The Trooper sucked],, I wanna play songs like Hallowed Be Thy Name, Flight of Icarus, Heaven Can't Wait, etc.

I think he was being sarcastic about "Unforgiven II". Reguardless, listen to the Kill Em All album.

Haha, Im so tired of people proclaiming Metallica is dead. And Ryan, theres a reason theres a Unforgiven trilogy, its a saga the band has been working on ever since the Black album. And in my opinion the Unforgiven III is one of the best songs since Justice For All. So suck on those potaters.
