Would you sacrifice online gaming for three pieces of avatar gear?
Microsoft needs a few guinea pigs for something called “Xbox Live Labs,” a program that runs network tests as you use your Xbox 360. In a recent reveal blog post, Major Nelson states that Xbox Live Labs is simply an initiative to perform tests and increase performance--none of the data will be used to find out who you are or anything.
There’s a catch and a reward for giving Microsoft a hand. The catch is that you won’t be able to do any online gaming or activities that require downloading while you’re running Xbox Live Labs. The reward is a zero point "Thank You" achievement and three pieces of avatar gear that make your little dude look like a mad scientist. See?
If this sounds like something you’d like to do, just head over to the “Community” channel on Xbox Live and then the Live Labs panel inside it. Tests will start at some point today and will run until March 27.
You get a lab coat at a half hour, a brain helmet at one hour, and an Einstein-looking wig at six hours. Fair warning: you can't really do anything else on your 360 while it's going, and it eats a lot of bandwidth.
I did this first thing in the morning yesterday. Got my achievements & avatar gear. It's not like I was going to use my Xbox to play anything at 5am anyway.

How else are they supposed to perform widespread tests on a massive number of unique situations? I am so sick of people like you acting like they know everything. It's perfectly optional, and it helps improve the service. It's not like you're giving up precious gaming time to make them money, it's to improve the fucking service that you pay for. You could easily set this to run over night and it'd probably waste as much of your time and do as much harm to your 360 as an hour long gaming session. Instead of being arrogant, maybe you should try looking at something for more than two seconds. Or better yet, don't do it! That's why it's optional. "

I did it. Pretty painless, spent the time watching the P4 ER, and then playing DA2. I'll do just about anything for free if it'll help them improve their networking.
If anyone outside the US wants to be in on this it's very easy (if not covered already in this thread)
-make a US account (can be silver) -sign in on that US account and sign into your account on the second controller -download and start up labs using controller one, both accounts will earn the achievements -you can start Labs up using Quick Launch now using your non-US account if you need to
All I did was start it before I went to bed and when I woke I had all three achievements and three pieces of avatar gear. This also helped me complete the Giant Bomb S-Rank Championship Edition (5/5 S-Ranks)...only 5 more to go to finish that one. lol
I let it run for about 3 1/2 hours, if it can help improve performance I'm all for it. I would've liked if they offered some MS points for my "trouble", but 3/3 cheevos for no work is nice too.
