Microsoft: No New Xbox Anytime Soon

Better cozy up with the consoles you have now. It may be a while before you get the chance to spend hundreds more on new ones.

Get used to it.
Get used to it.
It's a question we've pondered on a couple of recent Bombcasts and also just shooting the bull around the office: How much longer until we start hearing about new consoles from the likes of Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and any heretofore unknown dark-horse entrants into the next round of game hardware production? Going by the traditional five-year cycle--and, more immediately, Microsoft's truncated four-year schedule for the first Xbox--it's high time rumors about new consoles started leaking, at the very least. We're more than three years on from the release of the Xbox 360, after all. (Can you believe it? They grow up so fast.)

But doesn't it feel a little too soon for all that? Sony has made plenty of noise about its desired decade-long life cycle for the PlayStation 3, and now Microsoft's entertainment president Robbie Bach has declared the Xbox 360 is also here to stay for some time, according to a story on the San Jose Mercury News site.

The world's largest software maker will focus on improving the Xbox's games and features rather than rushing to introduce a new model, President Robbie Bach said in an interview. The Xbox 360 started selling in 2005, replacing the original Xbox, which debuted in 2001...

"Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient," said Bach, 47. "The life cycle for this generation of consoles — and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well — is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations."

Nintendo, of course, has the least reason of the three to put new hardware on the market, considering it (bafflingly) still can't keep the current console on shelves, and also turns a profit on every unit sold.

Bach makes a good point about the mainstream audience and its indifference to "faster and prettier" graphics; the Wii is all the proof you need of that market reality. But being on the graphics-whoring fringe, I can say I'd like to see at least one more round of super-powerful consoles, specifically one that can push games in 1080p at comfortable frame rates. The systems we have now are a fair bit short of that mark. Seems that I may have to wait quite a while for that, due to the general public's unwillingness to buy expensive new systems, however.

How soon before you're ready to pony up for the next console generation? You know it has to happen eventually.

I just bought my ps3 a few weeks ago, so i am defenitally happy that all the systems will be much longer in life span.  This generation I believe was a little too expensive for everyone, mainly early 360's and all ps3's.

The PS2 felt like it was around for AGES... These new consoles have just exited the womb and already someones gone and impregnated the machine. Seriously it's way to early for a new console generation.

My money's on Microsoft releasing a new console first. Sony are going to push the PS3 for years to come (what with its selling point being on future potential and everything), and the Wii continues to sell like hotcakes, so i can't see Nintendo unveiling any new hardware until sales slow to a grinding halt.

I'm rather happy with the way the 360 currently is, so nothing lost to me. And although the Wii certainly is still selling out like crazy still, I think that perhaps it could benefit the most out of a new console or at least some way to better adapt--how do I put this, normal games (?)--because the wii thing isn't exactly working out for the so-called hardcore gamers. There's not much incentive to play a Wii when the best title it has to offer came out at launch...and frankly, I didn't really like playing Twilight Princess with a wii-mote. Sure there's the classic controller and the ability to use a GC controller, but it's not the same. Classic implies that it's meant only for the old games, and it pretty much is, and a GC controller just doesn't exactly sit right on a Wii to me.

I know Nintendo has just shown this new patent, but I hope the company has something better than that in mind for the experienced gamer. Although casual seems to be where the money is rolling, us nut-jobs will dish out a lot of cash if it's worth the time.

Fine with me....the new OLED TV's which will replace the current Plasma, LCD  (and make them obsolete) ...will just be hitting their stride and pricemark in 2011/2012...I'm fine with upgrading my console then not before.

This is good, I think it would be better for game developers to push these consoles as far as possible and create great games.

I think this will start some sort of trend though and I'll explain what I mean:

I personally think that there is an aesthetic limit to technology, we can only get so advanced before we finally stop and experiment with what we have. Thus, I think much is the same for gaming systems; For instance there is a limit to how photo-realistic graphics can be before they start looking the part (ie. in the case of movies, think of 3d animation like 'Beowulf' or 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within') and once we reach that limit, the maximum graphical aspect of video games can be realized. Such is the same with other categories of gaming, like gameplay or features of gameplay: For example:  experience points in an RPG has alot of derivatives... but it all leads to the ability to grow  in some shape or form and I think that area of videogames has reached its limit. The only way to change that aspect is to apply variation to what is growing).

I think this will create a larger gap in the development of newer consoles. Like, we might see new console technology come out a bit sooner after the current batch, but I think the generation 'after' the 'next' generation of consoles will take a longer time to surface. Then again, this will be a time that developers can get closer to mastering their respective arts and provide a taste of heightened realistic gameplay that isn't already present in games today.

Sorry, I know this is all pretty much common sense. Just thought I'd share though.

As for what developer will release a new console first. I'd say probably Nintendo... not counting the Nintendo DSi of course ;)

Consoles have reached that "how can games look better than this?" mentality you just didn't get out of the PS2/Xbox era. As far as I'm concerned, as long as my 360 is chugging along and developers are making software for it, it's not going anywhere. I'm cool with that.

@ kboy,

I think it's more developers saying  "dude!  these games are mad too expensive to make...maybe we should slow it down alittle."

Every new console iteration requires more and more staff to work on the games (Except for the Wii of course...Nintendo didn't get that memo).

I'm happy too with where the consoles are right now.  I can wait a while longer this gen as well.  Plus I don't want to even know how these companies plan on transitioning all of our paid for DLC to the new consoles (if they plan on doing it at all).

my initial reaction was disappointment bc i'm planning to skip the current gen of consoles and hope the next one w/ backwards compatability.  but after reading the wise comments it would be better for all involved if it was released later.  maybe i'll get 360 after more hardware revisions and a ps3 once it's reasonably priced.

i wonder if they're going to use SSDD technology (a la macbook air) for next gen though.  i remember back in the days GS hardware swapped in a SSDD into a ps3 but they didn't see any big performance out of it.

I'm not in any real hurry to see the next batch of consoles being released. Heck, I think I'd be fine with seeing another five years in the current generation's lifespan. And if I really get eager for something to blow me away graphically, I'll upgrade my PC.

@ the_purgatory_station,

hey did you see the new SD cards at CES!  The format is called SDXC and they top out at a whopping 2TB.  64GB ones are due by the end of this year.  Makes you wonder how technologies like say...Bluray will survive.  Wouldn't it be cool to buy your games on a card the size of a postage stamp?  I really think if this generation extends far enough we will see a console without Disc Drives and Digital Distro and SD card Kiosks will abound!

Oh!! and SSD's will get better especially with the breakthroughs mentioned above with the SD cards.  They are supposed to be super fast!

I dont know about the rest of you but im glad i dont have to rush and spend more money on a new console so fast.  Microsoft could have shot themselves in the foot by releasing the 360 only 4 years after the original xbox.  Lucky for them they built a good machine(processing wise not hardware stability wise) and i hope we dont see the 720 or what ever they call it for a while.  This way sony doesent have to rush out their console again too.

You are a PC gamer at heart Brad.

I hope that more developers develop for PC (and for consoles, I'm not to big on exclusivity), and make souped up ports to take advantage of the new and cheaper hardware to fully realize their game, the end of life time period for consoles is when PCs start to shine.

"a little longer that previous generation" isn't really saying much. I would love for it to be another 4-5 years, but I'm guessing  "a little longer" may barely be an extra year. I hate to think about it in general, because the yet next console is always retarded at the start, especially this gen with all the DLC people have and arcade games, since I have a bad feeling you will just be fucked out of all that shit, though I would like for it not to be true. Figuring 2010-2011 at the latest the next xbox will be out, or near out.

I would like our current hardware to keep chugging along for another 4-5 years. That way, I won't need to spend over $1,000 on new video game hardware. (I buy every console when they come out). I wouldn't mind a new Nintendo console in a few years, since that hardware is obsolete.

I hope these consoles last several years, including the handhelds. I just bought a PS3, I've only owned my Xbox for a year, my PSP is only 8 months old. I want this stuff to last, especially since the price on it all is so steep.

I'm happy there is no rush from any of the companies to release a new console. The economy isn't that good, the systems will still last for a few years and the jump from one generation to another will be bigger and more impressive, possibly employing new technology.

This is great news.  The economy is in the crapper.  Are any of us really that eager to plunk down several hundred dollars for a new system right now?  In a time when companies are scaling back, or in some cases, falling apart, what game developer wants to tackle the intricacies of a new console?  None of it would make financial sense.  Microsoft and Sony are still in the red with their hardware divisions.   I heard that Microsoft only recently started to turn a profit on each console sold, but I doubt that includes the billion dollars they had to dole out for the red-ring debacle.  I believe it costs Sony $448 per unit to produce. [http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aGE0AE8Gfb8c&refer=home], so they still have a way to go.

And there is still a lot of life in the two hi-def gaming systems.  We haven't yet seen the best of what either of these units can produce.  That has me excited for the future of both.  If game developers don't have to worry about getting ready for the next cycle, they can put all their focus on producing top notch games for this generation.  We haven't seen any original MMOs on the consoles yet, and they need time to build an audience before they become viable. Microsoft said they pulled the plug on True Fantasy Live Online, because the amount of time they projected it needed to be considered a success was more than the amount of life left in the original Xbox.  So much of the stuff Sony promised us before release has yet to hit store shelves.  Good stuff is in the pipes for both.

Finally, let them cook.  Whenever, the new systems hit the market, I hope (A) they aren't busted [Microsoft], or (B) impractically priced [Sony].  Give the designers time to make reasonably sure everything is functioning.  That the cost of each unit isn't so far above rational expectations.  Only then, should they release a console.  Hell, I wouldn't be annoyed if they annouced in May of 2012 or 2013 for a holiday release.

This isn't a real surprise. I figured it'd be a while until the next console generation. The NXE is Microsoft's way of extending the life cycle of the 360, and thus not having to release a new console out too soon. Sony have said they plan on the PS3 having a long life cycle and Nintendo would be crazy to release a new console anytime soon with the insane popularity of the wii.

All I have to say is THANK GOD.  After shelling as much money as I have this generation, I want a longer return on my investment.  Graphics are good enough this generation that I'm willing to wait and just enjoy the games I have for a while and pick up new ones of course. :)

This is a good thing.  I've basically decided that I won't buy any more consoles after this current generation.  I might buy a PS3 after the PS4 comes out.  But I'm pretty sure that I'm going back to PC gaming after all is said and done.  1 major reason.. Backward compatibility.  Instead of buying new hardware with it's unique software, any game that I buy for the PC I can play 15 years from now no problem.

Can't do that with any of my 360 games.  Just feels like a waste of money to me.  And this is coming from a person who just recently replayed Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis.

when the hardware is cheap to facilitate a new console that they know will sell X amount of consoles they will do it, until that day there is no need and they will not do it.

anyways I am totally fine with how HD consoles play and feel, ditching them this soon for ungodly expensive ones now would kill my interest and would probably kill there brand name.

This is actually kind of good news for me. I just bought a ps3, and I'd like to think that I'm going to be able to keep it for a while without it seeming "old" and "outdated"

Also, I agree, I'd love to see a console that can run games in 1080p! It would be incredible.

I think the best thing that could come from this is maybe another company seeing a window in which they could release a new console, and then it selling well due to customers curiosity. I don't think this will happen, but a boy can dream can't he?

Man, I haven't yet been able to afford to "pony up" for this generation of consoles. We have a Wii (and I own a couple of DSes), but that's it so far. I also review games for a living, but unlike you big boys, I make peanuts and can't afford all the latest toys. That said, I might just be able to catch up this spring if the two next-gen makers opt for another price cut.

This news from Microsoft is good news to me. If I do purchase a new-gen console, I'm gonna need it to have legs that last a while. Besides, I hate feeling like I'm always playing catch-up, even if money wasn't an issue (which it usually always is).

Microsoft and Wii are still making tons of money on their systems. In order for another console generation to happen all the systems, collectively, would need to show a consistent decline in sales. As of right now that won't happen anytime soon. And for the first time, in a long time, the games are holding their own. It used to be the other way around. Both Microsoft and Sony have bragged that their consoles will do glorious things online and showing us what the console(s) features can do which obviously worked because everyone picked up at least one "next-gen" console. Now it's simply about the games, which is nice. Also with today's economy who can afford another console?
